Check out this link about Mauser, a South African Arabian gelding endurance horse. http://barefootattheworldchamps.w...-horse-to-go-to-the-world-champs/ .

Note the photos of this endurance horse competing...bitless.

This post also stated that "Barefoot horses rebound sooner after competition than shod horses." I had not heard nor read that before. I have believed that barefoot horses pulse down quicker than shod horses...and proved it to myself last October.  My Morgan pulsed down slightly faster than the gelding we had been riding with during Raptor Run. He was younger, an Arab and a former National Champion. (Perhaps this was not a fair test as he was smitten with Mandy and his heart may have been a flutter.)

Great article. I guess when I think that the horses hooves move the blood and barefoot from what I know improves their circulation so that all made good sense to me:)

I've never heard of a World Championship for endurance horses.  Where and when is it held?  I think in the U.S. they just award based on total points won...is there more?

A friend just won the NATRC Region 3 race in Moab, his first, on his barefoot Paso Fino.

But, I still think being barefoot or not depends on the horse, its hooves, and the terrain involved.  The terrain in those pictures looks to be all grass, loamy earth or sand.  No problem.   The terrain in Moab is almost all sand with some slick rock patches.   I still shoe for these "Rocky Mountains" that I ride in.  I've seen too many sore barefoot horses - and sored one myself - to trust another ride to bare feet.

The International Federation for Equestrian Sports--FEI--recognizes endurance as a sport and sanctions international competition. The AERC sanctions endurance competition in the US and Endurance GB is the governing body in GB. The FEI World Endurance Championships 2012 will be held in GB.

The NARTC governs competitive trail ride competitions. They are NOT races.  You are penalized for covering the course in less time than the allowed window of time. Another curious distinction between the two competitions involves dismounting during the event. In CTR, you are disqualified if you dismount. In endurance competition, the rider often dismounts during steeper ascents and descents in order to spare his/her horse, and while approaching the mandatory vet checks in order to enable the horse to pulse down sooner.

The FEI and AERC events are endurance rides that are races.

Under the rules of the FEI and AERC, the first horse to cross the line and pass the vet check as "fit to continue" is the winner. Under the rules of competitive trail riding and the endurance rules in some nations (though not international competition nor that in the USA), as well as for limited-distance endurance rides (25-49 miles or 40-79 km in one day), the winner is determined by a combination of speed and the recovery rate of the horse or by a required standard.

My bad...it was an AERC ride...50 miles.  Definitely an Endurance Race.

I will tell a funny story about it.   At the end of the first day everyone asked Russ if he was sore.  He said, "No." and they all said, "You will be!"...so at the end of the 2nd day, they asked him again...and he's walking around just fine.  When he again said, "no"...a couple said their next horse was going to be a Paso Fino!    LOL
