Have y'all heard of this stuff? I read about it on Yvonne Welz's site. I had been staying away from hoof dressings (questionable ingredients, not sure about how good a 'wet/dry' situation was for the hoof) but her article (linked below) clarified some things.

It's been dry dry dry here, and my horse's hooves were so hard that a new rasp would just skitter across the hoof without taking anything off. So I figured I had to do something, so I started looking at soaking. That's when I came across the article.

http://www.thehorseshoof.com/soaking.html

Anyways, in it she mentions this hoof dressing that has all natural (no harmful chemical) ingredients and it supposedly moisturizes the hoof and helps it hold in moisture and also repel excess moisture. It sounded good so I went and got some. I put it on her hooves, put the easyboot gloves on overnight, and the next morning, I was able to trim her. Yay!

The dressing's link is below.

Very interesting article, Erin.

Interesting "foot spa", too. I've spoken with Claudia Garner as well as her husband, Charles, a few times. They used to be dealers for Brenderup trailers.

Now I have a better understanding for why Mandy will simply stand in a shallow creek or river crossing during our trail rides. It is not unusual for her to stand in place for up to 10 to 15 minutes without actually drinking any water. When I ask her if she is ready to move on and cross the water, she will typically feign that she is dropping her head to drink, knowing that I would never restrain her from drinking. Now I believe she is simply doing what she has to do to cause me to allow her to soak her feet. Generally, she will not choose to drink from a water crossing till we've been on the ride for about three hours.

I have my water tanks in an area where I can over flow them daily so the horses get their feet wet every time they drink if they choose. They can also go to the dry side, but they usually all choose to wet side to stand in. When you think about it, horses in a natural setting would be getting their feet wet every time they visit a drinking hole, so I try to offer them that luxury too and by the looks of things, they really appreciate it.

Going to read up, although I am not really a fan of dressings. But I am a fan of "never say never".

Wild horses gathered around watering hole. http://wildwest-media.photoshelte...G0000uzUoee0yd9I/I0000WewP5izuwQc

This guy's pictures are pretty impressive.

That’s interesting Marty. Yes horses are good at feigning things when we fail to understand. I’m glad when I do understand & even more glad when I hear of others who also understand.

Sonny who has soft feet will also like to stand in water when ever he can(which is actually counterproductive for him) so I don’t think it’s only when feet are hard or need more moisturizing.

There is a product in Australia called EFFOL made from lanolin. It is also made overseas in Germany I think. It’s been around for years. When I was much younger we used to nickname it EFF-OFF!! It has no animal product in it & has camphor in it too.
