I thought I would start this thread to share experiences of those that are trying to go barefoot.
I will take my posts from the other forum of what I had posted on my boy. :D
EDIT-- due to request (by Leah :D ) please start your own hoof thread if you also would like to share hoof transitions, or just hoof pics in general. THANKS! :D

Okay here are my pics that I said I would post--I cleaned his feet the best I could with a sponge and water, but was unable to get all dirt and manure off; it was freezing outside--you see the kinda sparkly stuff on some of his frogs--those are ice crystals. Last time he was trimmed was a about 4 weeks ago--he will be trimmed again on the 16, and I'll post pics again then.
Pics taken 12-06-2008,

Here are the pics I said I would share, they were taken yesturday 12-16-08, a couple of hours after his feet were trimmed, tell me how you think my farrier did.

From what I have learned so far online, it looks to me like there are some flares that could be tighten, especially the RH outside flare, and the RF toe looks like it still could be shortened back some more to the sole. Thanks for looking, and give me some suggestions. Thanks. :D
It has been about 6 weeks out of shoes now...the before shoots were taken about 4 weeks after shoes were initially pulled. :D |

Hey everyone, thought I would give an update of how my boys feet look now, I took these pics earlier today 1-17-09. He has had an abscess on his LH inside heel bulb, that is healing, so his LH has some green (in crevices) and yellow (near cornet band) medication on it. When the vet took x-rays to make sure nothing else was wrong beside the abscess; from my un-trained eye, it looked like my boy had pretty good sole depth, I did not have much time to look at the x-rays, but I am thinking of calling to see if I can view them again, or get copies, but to me his coffin bone placement looked pretty good.
I am excited that his LF crack is growing out. He seems to not be ouchy on any of his feet in his snow and ice filled pasture, he also seemed to be fine for the walking and brief trotting that I had him do on the cement today to see how he was, he seemed a little tender at the trot, but that could have just been the bandaged that I had re put on the LH that was impeding his movement.
I have been using the rasp in between trims to keep his feet tidier, the farrier has not been back out yet since last time I posted. The RF concerns me as the hoof wall keeps coming off where the older abscess was on that foot, but he doesn't seem to be overly concerned about it.
here are the pics; tell me what ya think; :D

forgot to get a LH Front, but got this pic from the bottom/side view showing some concavity that is developing, you can also see the area that the abscess came out the cornet band below my hand on his inside heel bulb.

That's it for the pics I have taken so far. I have bought a rasp and have been doing his trimming so far (according to what I have learned from sites on the web, and Pete's book), since the second batch of photos which were from when my farrier trimmed last.
He is on alfalfa hay at the moment (for the winter)--I know not the best, but I board and have limited control over that. He is on pasture in the summer. Has a mineral/salt block available at all times, as well as water. I have been giving him a little safe choice with horseshoer's secret, but I am actually going to change to farriers formula.
Let me know what you think of his progress so far, any suggestions/advise you have for me, or any other questions /clarifications you might want from me. Thanks! :D
All the pics were first posted on Anyone Care to Share Hoof pics thread on the Parelli Forum. |

Good job! They are healing quite nicely!
From what I've learned...
I would just keep the edges rolled a bit more, no sharp edges, and the hoof wall needs to be the same thickness all the way around the soul.
K.C. LaPiere has started a new free hoof club with great resources available and some very knowledgeable people if you're interested..

Also I'm sure you've been to this one but I just love it so I'll put the link just 'cause we're allowed..

They really are coming along nicely. Good job and good farrier. I can't believe they were so bad before! I've shod horses for the summer for 45 years and go barefoot in the winter. I've never had hooves look like that with shoes. I assume you changed farriers in there too?
I'm going to try the Gloves this year and see if we can stay barefoot. 3 shoeings pays for a set. I am hoping they make them small enough for Rosie, she is 13.2 but has wide feet. Still wears a 000 though. _________________ Carol Nudell

Only farrier change was that I started to do his feet myself. I still have not changed farriers, but were I am doing a touch up on his feet about every two weeks I have not had to have the farrier come out--I've been able to do everything with just the rasp.
Thanks Pasobaby and Jokersmama; I to think his feet are looking much better.
I will be taking pics again about February 17th so that I have pics about every 30 days for his transition period.

Thanks Pasobaby
Well my boy had a swollen leg for a couple of days and I started to suspect another abscess, I was given him a little bute for the pain so that he would be more comfortable, and so that he would move around as blood supply is important to an abscessing hoof--was about ready to take him to the vet, but today the abscess popped out the coronet band, and his leg was no longer swollen, and he was walking and trotting on it pretty well. gave him another very small dose of bute for the little tenderness he has left, and I will just watch it and make sure that it heals nicely. This time his abscess was on his RH inside heel bulb--the abscess before was on his LH inside heel bulb. So he is on the mend again. This is weird--went almost 4 years with no feet abscesses, and now 2 very close together--hopefully they are behind him now though. :D _________________ http://myjourneycarefreegirl.blogspot.com/

Thanks for the help and links jokersmama.
I will do my best to roll the edges a bit more--guess I need to read up on that some more. :D _________________ http://myjourneycarefreegirl.blogspot.com/

OK let's do this one step at a time.
First you are doing a very nice job :D
I do have a couple of suggestions that will REALLY make things amazing.
Go to here:
http://thehorseshoof.com/JW_Toes.pdf
Can you see the difference in the good toes on that page and your toes?
I would love to see you make your toes look like those.
:D
Here is another article that shows what not to do:
http://thehorseshoof.com/HC_Roll.html
Can you see how the roll is not as strong? More like yours?
Let's start there... |
