If anyone records this to their DVR I'd love to have a DVD of it. I just read her last book and I'm really curious about her. I thought it was very different from her other books.
Please let me know.
Thanks. _________________ "Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise; risking more than others think is safe. Dreaming more than others think is practical and expecting more than others think is possible." |

this is one of the best things I've ever watched. Remarkable woman, THE most remarkable acting, I just want to go lay down with my neighbors cows. I know why moo. I wondered because I can hear them and I always worried about it. I know why they moo. _________________ "It was once said I should clear my head for one cannot ride a Thoroughbred. Hot they are. It was really well done, it gives you an appreciation for autistic kid's perspective, not to mention the woman herself is remarkable. I hadn't known before that she designed the systems for herding the cows so that they aren't scared and all that. If you can watch it, I recommend it! _________________ Shannon |

I saw this last night...this is amazing. If anyone has the chance to watch it or can get someone to tape it for them, I highly recommend it It is available right now on Rogers On Demand as a free movie. Maybe HBO? _________________ Wanda

Imo, the real message of the movie wasn't as much about her ability to communicate with animals as it was about society's limited sphere of understanding. I say that just judging from the way she was treated by the people around her who were unable to understand her, or didn't try to understand her.
As a society, we really have no idea what we don't know and it sometimes takes someone like Temple Grandin to make that very clear.
It's definitely a movie worth watching.

Temple Grandin is amazing. She has a very interesting perspective and has been able to use her knowledge to improve the welfare of animals (especially cattle and other food production animals).
I didn't get to see the special, but I've read a handful of her books.
One of her books that I read last spring was “The Way I See It: A personal look at Autism and Asperger’s,” It's about Autism, but many of the ideas and things she discusses apply equally well to animals and animal training. One point she talks about over and over again is finding the root of the behavior BEFORE punishing or scolding the individual. So many times with pets and with people we get frustrated with misbehavior without considering the perspective of the animal.
(I wrote a short review of the book on my blog HERE.)
Her newest book, Animals Make Us Human is a GREAT read. Each of the chapters focuses on a different species. Many of her insights on animal behavior and how we could improve animal care and welfare are things that everyone should read.
This is one of my favorite passages from that book, which I discussed a bit on my blog in this post.
"When you’re working with animals, novelty can be attractive or scary depending on how it is presented. The single most important factor determining whether a new thing is more interesting than scary is whether the animal has control over whether to approach the object. Animals are terrified by forced novelty. They don’t want new things shoved into their faces, and people don’t either. But if you give animals and people a new thing and let them voluntarily decide how to explore it, they will." _________________ ~Mary
