Different ways of setting it up - he is finding it hard to understand, once he has it he is ok but needs to trave more - too tense!

hm if i look at what i did in some form of order (seperating the movement into "parts" )

doing hq yields with the neck either strait or slightly positioned to to the side where the HQ is moving to.

One of the first exercises KR has . About "rolling" either the FQ or the HQ over

Another excerise i did during a course with KR was going into the movement than flowing into a halt while keeping the body position , wait for the horse to relax/let go and than depending on how good it was , what your goal is that day.. Either a full release, a semi release putting him strait and walk of into something new. Or move away in the same posture again trying to maintain the softness you obtained at a halt..

other things on the ground that might help is one of the excerises BB shows about stepping the hq over on the suggestion of the leadrope...

Because in the end its just about controlling the position of the hq

I’m actually a bit confused as to exactly what travers are. I know we’ve had this discussion before here but I never got a proper handle on it. There seemed to be some variance to the description. I wonder if I already do them without knowing it.

Can someone explain in plain simple English what the horse & rider do that constitutes travers please?

Thanks

Ooo thanks for that spitfire! I added that link to my fav's!

yes I am using travers to help Sonny's FQ/HQ balance problems both from the ground & ridden.

I am doing all those movements on the ground using a very short rein &  then ridden. The leg yield is hard to do on the ground trying to keep the head turned away without blocking forward movement.

I worked them out for myself just thinking about how he needed to move evenly on both sides to get better balance. Although I did them ridden to some extent during the last clinic I attended several years ago at Ken Faulkner's.

Travers is the shoulder walking forwards in a straight line, and the hindquarters walking along a paralell inside track.

try this website Clarissa - its a uk one that you may not have seen yet.
