It's About The Horse

This has been here for the last couple weeks. I first noticed it after she had her vaccinations, kept an eye on it for three days, then I thought it had lessened. But the other day I went out (I board her so don't see her for days at a time), and it was golf ball size, firm, not painful, and you could slide it around. Any ideas? My dad, who is a small animal vet, upon phone consult, said something about a possible guttural pouch infection and that I should definitely have a well qualified vet to look at it. I just wondered if you guys had seen this before and had any ideas. I will call the vet and make an appoinment tomorrow.

hum....no I have never seen anything like that on a horse. Good idea to get a vet to take a look though...you can't be too careful about these things.

After shots a horse (or a human) can get a sterile abscess. Not at all uncommon, and they do travel. I've never seen one behind the ear like this though. She's a grey horse too.

I think the vet should look at it too. It could be swelling from an insect bite...

See if it is itchy - might help confirm a bite or sting.

Is it hard or soft? It is right on the artery feeding the ear so may be a rupture resulting from her bashing her head under a rail in her stabling? Or she may have rubbed on timber rails & got a splinter in there?

If hard(ish) it could also be a dry puss lump from head gear rubbing & causing an ingrown hair.
If hot/warm it will be inflamation & I would hunt for an entry point of foreign body or ingrown hair. Or like a boil/big pimple if it is sore.

If soft I would be thinking soft tissue injury or artery/ vien rupture.
