It's About The Horse

What one DVD (or set of DVDs) -- Parelli or not -- would you recommend to the typical horse-crazy girl who is taking normal riding lessons at a normal stable? Something that will give her some good natural horse sense without encouraging her to try anything controversial or dangerous. And something she doesn't have to make a long-term, high dollar committment to. Just a good introduction. (And please be specific. This is for the girl's mom who won't know anything more than the name of the DVD I suggest.)

I appreciate your thoughts on this.

One of my first disconnects with Parelli was this very question. It got to the point where I didn't know what to recommend to newbies. And obviously I still don't because I'm posing the question here.

Still think the level one is a good start for ground work. Not real keen on Parelli, but it's my foundation and it got me to where I am. If she can hit a Brent Graef clinic, that would be golden. He doesn't sell videos. Not sure on the riding as far as dvd's go. Water hole rituals were the turning point in my relationship with the herd. One dvd? agh! Can't do it.

Which Level 1? The originals?

It doesn't have to be just *one* DVD. It can be a set.

How do I tell her to look for the originals? Was it only released on video (not DVD)? And I assume Parelli doesn't sell these -- that she'll need to look on e-bay?

Cindy, the old levels were in a grey pack with booklets and VHS tapes. I'm not sure that they ever transferred those to DVDs or CDs. Parelli's don't sell them anymore so she'd have to look on eBay. Amazon sells the book.

I would recommend Parelli for sure. I started with the Red level 1 and Pat's book Carol referenced, these two things taught me a lot when I got back into horses after 20 yrs w/out.

Another vote for the Red Level one pack. Changed my life forever and my horses STILL thank me each and every day.

I vote the red level 1 pack. Just for kicks I ordered the old video set and I have to say I got a bit lost. It was hard to hear what Pat was saying. I think to start out with the red set is easier to understand. ebay should definitely have those sets.

Either Herthas or the originals or the book. The red set (Linda levels) was awful and was the first straw for me!! And the blue level 2 was even worse!!!! I don't know about their most recent set though.....Probably a level 1 clinic wuld actually be best, THEN look at the dvds/videos!!! Actually seeing it, either auditing or participating is better than any book or video, and the bonus - you can ask questions!!!

Actually Hertha's is really nice (sorry Hertha!!). She has combined PNH, WHR and clicker training (positive reinforcement training) into one "horsemanship course" complete with exercises and work sheets. It's very good and affordable.
