A splint just popped out!!

I just recently moved from Iowa to SC. Since the move, I have begun to ride my 3-yr-old, 15.2 H MFT, bareback and only at a walk. He stepped in a hole the other day. I noticed, last night, that he had a splint on his foreleg. He has not been lame and there is no heat or soreness!?! Maybe I missed it before, but I don't think so and he has NEVER been lame or sore; I see him everyday and would have known.

Any ideas? Anything that I should be doing at this stage?

I have not taken the time to establish a vet in this area, but I will be doing so promptly....in the meantime anyone who has had any experience with splints would be welcome to calm my nerves....

Thanks, Danni and poor little (well, big actually) Zane.

splints

Thank you, All.

I knew "what" a splint was, what confused me was that there had never been any soreness with it.

I will try the "Splintex".

All my veterinarian books are back home in Iowa, so I appreciate the Merck website!!!

I really appreciate having this forum....

I have a great vet in my area.  Where do you live and if you are close enough, I would highly recommend him to you.

The splints do not usually merit a vet. Make sure its not inflammed or sore, rest for a while until you are sure its stopped developing - could be weeks - if a youngster I would give time off with no work at all to let it calm down. Treat daily with cold hose if active then whatever treatment you choose, but evry day - possibly for weeks. I have managed to reduce splints which have appeared on any horse , some vanished completely
