Anyone heard of Schreiner's Herbal Solution?Billy G has rubbed off virtually all of his mane except for a few strands. We've tried Tea Tree Oil. It's not helping. MTG is so messy and toxic. We heard of this herbal solution, but it's really expensive. Anyone have any experience with it?

Try mixing 50:50 Listerine (can be store brand) with mineral or baby oil. Rub in. Do for several days and see if it helps. You might spray straight Listerine for a while too, if there is no hair left. The Listerine will kill whatever is causing it to itch.

A good friend turned me on to Schreiner's Herbal Solution less than 2 weeks ago. Mandy had rubbed a whole section of her tail raw against the trailer butt bar (displaced behavior from another issue). In less than a week, her raw spot was drying and generating new skin. Within a week she was growing new hair. That spot is now covered in shafts of new hair. I'm sold.

I used it a while back on a pretty serious wound. It helped, but it didn't work any kind of magic. I was not all that impressed with it for the price I paid for it. I think I still have a little left in the bottle, I know I saw the bottle sitting on the shelf in the barn. It is sad that I stopped using it before it ran out.

Thanks folks. We roached up what was left of his mane. It was really long and wavy and beautiful too. But actually he looks really nice with his mane shaved. Looks a lot better than a few long strands here and there. We've been using the Schreiners solution and it doesn't look so raw. I guess it's healing so far. We'll try the Listerine next if it doesn't get better.

I got the same results with Listerine and Zar. She rubbed a raw spot on her mane last summer. Within minutes she quit itching and 3-4 days of treatment later, new hair came back in. Can't beat the price.
One of my interesting ones is Baby, who is a gray horse and gets a dry spot in the middle of her back every summer. All the hair falls out and it flakes. I've had it sampled 3 times and can't find any cause. I had tried every commercial product I could find on it, Crud Buster, MSG, etc. Nothing changed it until I tried Listerine and Baby oil. It amazed me. I squirt it on and rub it in for a few days. The itching stops and new hair comes back. I've also used this on greasy heel and flakes in her tail. Gray horses seem to be a magnet of skin diseases.
I hate roaching too Sandy, but it often helps, especially hairy horses.

Listerine and baby oil huh . . .
I'll try that on Radar. It seems every other spring his coat doesn't shed out real well. He's on Dynamite's detox product at the moment and it's helping, but I'll try that to see if it calms some of the itching.
Of course, I've used Listerine on rain rot and sweet itch for years with very good results.

Well, the Schreiners Solution seems to be working fine. Hair is growing back. Of course now we'll have to have the Trojan Horse stand up mane look for a while. The Schreiners is helping our dog's ears too.
Only problem with the Listerine and Baby oil that I've found in the past is that when the horse rolls here in the desert dust and sand, it sticks to the oil and cakes on. But, yeah, a whole, whole lot less expensive.
