Appears to be a spider bite

My little buddy had a welt about a week ago and I figured he got stung by something.  This morning the swelling had spread and now there's a big lump, too.  I called the vet and before I could even finish describing it, he said, "Does it have a volcano-looking thing coming up?" He said he's seen Brown Recluse bites do that.

So, he's getting a little Bute and a hot pack and some ichthammol.  I feel terrible for him!

Please forgive the strange picture sizes.  I tried and tried and couldn't work it out!

Before the hot pack.

Different angle and after the hot pack.

OUCH!  Don't they cut them out of horses like they do people?  I have never heard of a horse with one before, so I honestly don't know.

It looks pretty painful.  Poor boy!

What do they cut out of people Carol? I had a brown recluse bite my leg and I'm left with about a quarter sized brown spot on my leg. I was just given topical and oral antibiotics

Doc says it won't spread through his body they way it can through a human.  My brother in law actually lost the end of his nose to a BC bite.  He had to have it reconstructed.  Doc said Percy may or may not even have a scar.

A BR can be very toxic for humans.  Some do well and the bite does not spread due to immediate attention.  I have seen people lose limbs due to continuous necrosis.  I think it according to the spider bite and the victim's immunity and the fast reaction to getting help.

Flint had an abscess once due to fresh stumps at the clinic in his paddock.  I had to irrigate after we lanced it.  Your may come to that if it gets bigger.

Does your horse have a elevated rectal temp. or it the spot warm to touch?

I saw a big one the other day and missed killing the mean thing!

No temp and the spot does not feel hot.  It still has not started to drain.  I may have the vet out tomorrow to lance it.  The poor guy is scratching it, but it just doesn't seem to want to drain.

No injections?  So no possibility of a sterile abscess?  That is itchy, too.  But, I would have the vet out.
