Bickmore Venice Turpentine

My farrier recommended this to me for my gelding. He has very soft ouchy front hoofs right now. We have been getting more rain than the ground can soak up right now. So he has a dry stall but mud between the stall and grass so I am not sure what to do. I really hate to put shoes on him but I know he needs something. Any suggestions because two cans of that stuff pays for him to be shod.

BTW I have only been using this stuff for a week and I don't see a difference. I clean his hoofs everyday and apply it. I let it soak up a little before turning him back out.

You might want to read about hoof dressings in the ,Limited permeability permeability of hoof wall, and then decide if that is the route you want to take.  Interesting timing to say the least.

when the rain stops and the ground drys, so do their feet.  Let them dry, put boots on them for rough ground for awhile and they should be fine, especially if they are properly trimmed for barefoot, and not flat trimmed for shoes.

If the soles get a bit flat, a few days in boots and pads I find gets them going in the right direction pretty quick.

Good luck.

I'm not sure how that compares to DuraSole.  I used this on Rosie after she was bruised when I tried going barefoot, and I used it on Zar who is ouchy on her fronts on stones.   I treated both horses for two weeks before the Red Canyon ride and never had an ouchy step.  I was real happy with it.

Carol, I have some stuff like that from the vet. I used it first now the turpentine. I really hate to keep him shod but I might have to. He has always been ouchy up front and it is worse now, he seems depressed...

I shoe mine in the summer, leave them unshod in the winter, and on winter rides I now have boots for Rosie for any rocky rides.

I tried barefoot and boots in the summer, but I just ride too much on long rocky trails.  Have had good luck with shoes and my horses are happier.  You might try shoeing just the fronts and see how he does.

What about that stuff PNH used to sell to harden the hooves?  Can't remember for the life of my what it was called . . .

Just jogging Erin's memory.  No endorsement implied here.

No problem.  I just saw no real value in it.  It is expensive, and comes off very quickly.

Thanks Mike.  I get few laughs on this forum, but got a good chuckle with that one!

I tried a hoof packing material here...it stayed in about 2 days...but then I packed in the house in my shoe treads and I've been scrubbing it out of my carpets ever since.
