Buying and SellingDoes anyone else have a problem with the purchase or sale of animals? I was approached about a mare and her foal yesterday. I said that I was interested but when the person wanted to talk money I just pulled out. I seem to have an issue with this. Are they to be bought or sold?

Perhaps you might look at it as arranging an adoption.

The owner kept saying "I just want to get what I paid for her" What I wanted to say was "your situation changed (not her fault) and now you just need to find her a good and loving home" I will wait and see what happens.....and be here for her and her foal if need be.

There is a woman who has contacted me umpteen times to "find a good home" for one of her horses...an unbroken 10 year old mare. She was six when this first started. Every time I'd send someone information on the mare, her price was suddenly $2K. So, I've quit sending people to her. Now since the first offer of a good home, the woman has paid $300/month board for four years for this horse she can't ride. She is a very nice, quality mare...but untrained, she will never find someone willing to pay $2 K for her. Maybe five years ago, but not now.
I've tried to tell her that in this market that price is unreasonable. Her comment then is, "but she doesn't do anything wrong!"...at which point I tell her, "but she doesn't do anything at all." It doesn't register.
Some times you just have to do just that, make an offer and then sit back and wait.
BTW - the other horses that she's sold, she started by asking the price paid, plus every dime she'd spent on clinics and training and retraining in the years she owned them.

In this market, people try to give me horses and I tell them no because I have to be able to care for and feed the ones I have. I can't afford another horse. Plus, I don't have time for another horse. I hope that I have enough hay for the winter months.
People don't get it, Nancy. You are actually helping her and she wants you to pay for the time she has owned the horse? That's like pay someone for a used car, that you are going to have to repair before you can do anything with it? Really...two mare and foal.

No one has asked me to take a horse but reading Craigslist I see many over priced horses. They have sat in someone's yard for breeding or a pet and at 10 yr. old they want an arm and a leg. Well I think they will be holding on to those horses for quite a while. Have seen a few saying moving, need gone this weekend. Poor horses...there are quite a few dog ads like that too. The dog has gotten too big...we are in an apt. REALLLLY??!!!!
Sorry...off topic. It tics me off. People should do their research!

I know how it feels. You want back what you invested in training. It's not always possible these days. I lucked out with Hawkie. He got a great home, no money was exchanged and I have Hawkie bucks to spend on training and clinics. I was very fortunate that this worked out. Selling a horse, even a good horse, is difficult.
No more horses for me. I'm hoping I'll be around for all three of my horses for the rest of their lives. And when Hawkie crosses that rainbow bridge, I'll be there for him, to bring him home.

If money & a place to put them was no option I would buy every horse I came across just to give them peace.
There is a monthly horse sale in Gympie & I have never been because of the horrors that abound there. Not only people selling work horses but sick, lame & un-needed stock with little empathy for the animals.
It's too much. But if money was no option I would buy every one by private treaty so they never had to wait a moment in the sale yards. I would get the vet to those that needed it & set the rest free.
I have deliberately alienated myself from the horse world in this region now because I don't have the resources either monitary or mentally. The cruelty & mindlessness is everywhere even amoung some NH people.

I hear you loud and clear Beth. Horses, Dogs, Cats...my responsibility. I just can't take in more than I can handle. But, I am fixing to have to call a lady who let a horse go on trial and the people sold the horse that was never paid for due to the trial period. Plus, people will charge the horse on a credit card, take it and then, reverse the charges. So free horse and no payments.
I have folks standing in line for Flint. He's so good with kids and me. Plus, a big hunk of love!
People get ponies for their kids and then, they out grow them. Those get sold off too quickly. It's really difficult. I have seen 40 rescue ponies and donkeys in our area hoarded and uncared for that finally got surrendered to the rescue after a battle for a month.
