Chris Cox..

I was looking around on giddyupflix and noticed CC has his 20 or so dvd set on there for rent.
A freind of mine is having some probs with her horse and she's not wanting to 'do pnh' anymore.
She's basically starting over.
Has anyone watched all of these?
Any suggestions on who would help the best. She feels she needs someone to 'tell her what to do in stages'.
Any suggestions?

I think all horses need to know the 7 games. Start there......

Waiting to see if anyone else watched CC .......

I have seen Chris Cox @ the Illinois Horse Fair a couple years in a row. I also have watched his RFDTV for years. I believe many of his DVDs are taken right off of those RFDTV shows. His "Stop The Bucking" DVD (which was a RFDTV Show) has been a legend. That horse was a LB "you can't make me" bucking fool, and very talented at it. CC was fantastic!

Anyhow, my observations of him. He is a sure enough brave cowboy. And if you seen him in his live Clinics, that's how he expects you to be. The type of person who can get their mojo going with some butt kicking. If that's your style your going to really go far with CC. IMHO that fits what a lot people need, especially Parelli followers. Of course, many Parelli people chose Parelli b/c they liked to stay afraid and safe (Linda style, I think Pat would kick butt if he could). So, pick your style. CC is very sensitive about kicking your butt, it's not like he's going to go "Ray Hunt" on you, but he'll get you doing what somebody should have told you all along to do. I sure seen happy riders afterwards in his clinic even if he sure had to chide them into it. I think he's pretty good to the horse too.

And I'm not saying Linda's style is bad. We have to realize some people just love horses and don't care about riding (hard to understand, but it's true) Some just like riding and don't care anything about the horse (we sure know this is true!) But, I bet your friend has one of those horses Linda's style isn't working on....

Now, if your talking DVDs, I always recommend Jonathan Field's. It's Parelli in the next dimension with everything you wanted Pat to expand on.

cynthia Thanks for your review!

Oh no ! Those 7 games have saved me more than once. If your horse knows what you mean when you "talk" (body language) it can save your life.
Ground manners and then work up form there, talk her into it !

I love me some Chris Cox.  Watched every video that giddyupflix has and have seen him person.  He is awesome for anyone who is serious.  If she's not serious then steer her away from him because he is intense and expects his students to be intense as well.  I've learned a lot from him and a couple of things I've learned from him have helped me out of a bad spot or two.

I think most of the problem lies with the crew she rides with, they PoohPooh on ground work and just bash most things. Lot's of ego in that group.
You guessed it, NO I don't ride with them. I think to much of my horses.
Levi knows the games already,, taught him stickless..
I use the stick for friendly game only, I like tieing things to it! hehehe
Oh, and Levi is now dragging things..

Ohhhhh poopers! Well she's not intense...
After last night she's "serious,", but not intense.

CC is intense.  I have watched a lot of his stuff.  I've seen him just about make a student cry........guess what?  That's what it takes sometimes.....phase 4 with humans.  I wouldn't go to a clinic of his, unless I was prepared to do as he directs.  He isn't likely to exhaust a student and horse though!

I don't get RFDTV (wish I did sooo bad), and I haven't seen his dvd's, but I have watched a few of his weekends streaming live on the 'net.  He really, really impressed me.  He's tough where he needs to be, and gentle where he needs to be, both with the horse and the rider.  His DVD's are on my list of "some day", I really was impressed with him.  Plus, he's no eyesore either!
ElaineW

nooo he's not a eyesore for sure ElaineC ! hehehe

nancy, I seen a show where a lady was crying,, but she made it through..
One thing that stuck with me was when he said if you have to touch your horse, DO IT AND GET OUT..
don't nag or be soft.. Just do it and get it done..

I had one of his shows saved on my hard drive (tivo) for almost a year.  It was where he taught a horse to drop his head and very quickly!  The horse had been in a tie down because his owner couldn't seem to get him to lower it.  I was mesmerized and watched it a bunch of times.  At the end he stood in the stirrups and raised the reins high and that horse just dropped his head, to the exact  level CC had set it and wouldn't bring it up no matter what

I clapped like a groupie   Anyone remember that one?
PasoBaby_CarolU

I've watched CC for years on RFD TV.  He's very good with horses and no-nonsense.  He's also not hard on the horses like Clinton or Craig.   He's very good.

I have to give a vote for the 7 games too.   I start all horses and all new riders the same way.   They might be called "games" but they're all about understanding horses and THAT is the key to training horses.

If she doesn't want to learn to understand horses, she would probably be best to send her horse to a Professional and just go to their barn for rides.   I honestly feel that people who don't study horsemanship really shouldn't train horses.

At Clemson when I saw Chris live, a woman was crying with her demo horse because she was - mho only - overwhelmed with emotion and scared.  He asked her if she wanted to get on the horse (after he had ridden it).  She said she would and climbed on and she was just blubbering.  He told her in no uncertain terms to "dry those tears!  there's no crying in horses!".  He was really firm with her.  He didn't exactly yell at her but he used his outside, no BS voice.

She wound up trotting and cantering her horse in the arena and she was just beaming at the end.  Of course, she started crying again but after she got off and was hugging Chris so hard he shouldn't have been able to breathe.

As a teacher, one has to know or feel how hard to push - when to move in a little and when to back off a little.  After all was said and done, what he said to her and how he said it was worth it.  The look on her face when she got off that horse was the proof.

Imho only - making someone cry or speaking to them harshly can be part of the process that creates a worthwhile place at the end of the session.

That said - I once walked out of a George Morris clinic because it was and is my strong belief that he was verbally abusing one of the participants.  Haven't read, watched or in any way shape or form patronized anything he has done since.
ElaineW

Nancy,,  I have not seen the show your talking about! But I will keep a eye out for it.

Carol,, Thanks alot for your thoughts! I feel the way you do about horsemanship, you can't quit learning!

Thanks Erin!
You bring up a good point, I think you can see the difference between someone helping and someone being a ass!! That's one reason I can't stand to watch CA. He is so demeaning!  I was flipping through the channels and seen him working with a womans head shy horse.. He was calling that horse names. I thought it was tacky.
Teaching humans, well I don't know if i would be good at that! When pushed I tend to shut down,, if the pushing continues I then lash out.. Reckon I am odd hehehe

What EVER route she takes all I can do is suggest things. NOt that I am right or know more etc..
One of my greatest lessons I have learned recently is that I don't have to be RIGHT!    My way is not the right way for others.
My only focus is on Levi..
But, she did ask my opinion

Has anyone seen Karen Scholl's dvds?  I suggested her to Elaine for her friend because I had seen a couple t.v. shows and liked her.  She seemed very to the point with no nonsense, but I don't know what her dvds are like.

I used to like CC, but lately all I see is him saying one thing and doing another.  I don't like how he rides his horses beyond the vertical and yanks the crap out of their mouths with a snaffle.  He lacks feel, but that is JMO.
