cinch suggestions?Need to buy a cinch for my saddle, if it ever gets here. Going western, so this will be all new to me. I hear mohair is comfy for the horse. I don't want the buckle to dig into the sides of the horse, and I know there are certain buckles and even cinches htat protect the horse. I know some brands are better than others. Any ideas?

I like synthetic so you can wash the sweat off. The problem with others is that they can get stiff from dry sweat. I also like cut back elbow space on my cinches. If you get a cinch with a roller buckle that should help.

I haven't used mohair but is a natural fiber and should be good. Cold water rinsing in between sweaty workouts to get the salt and sweat off. I have used felt backed cinches and a synthetic one recently. I have never had girth sores with either one. Rinsing or washing either of these was pretty easy, too.

I like my mohair cinch. I admit that I don't make my horse sweat that much and I spray mine off three or four times a year. It never gets crusty. If I buy another one I'd buy one with roller buckles, and where the fabric comes up over the buckle so the metal buckle isn't directly against the horse's skin. I also get the roper cinch so it spreads the pressure out over more surface area I saw my dream cinch at the feed store the other day, it was all that I mentioned above: mohair cord, roller buckle, roper style, and covered buckle. I thought it was weaver brand but I don't see it on the weaver website. Anyways, here's a the best one I found on the weaver site:

I like natural. I use cotton with western and leather with English. The Mohair or Alpaca cinches are very nice. I don't like fleece or felt, both slip when they get sweaty. Felt is very hard to get dry once wet.
I really like the roller bars that make it easier to tighten.
I imagine it already comes with leather billets and strap, but if not, I would trade out any nylon for leather. I have seen nylon slip sideways or twist all up. Pretty bad. And I don't like to use the buckle holes on the near side. They are always too tight or too loose. The joy of leather western cinches is that you can tighten them exactly. I would oil and work my cinch strap so it is buttery soft and easy to tighten.

All the horses I put my mohair on like it.It lets them breath no matter how tight you put it on.I haven't had any any problems with pinching or rubbing of any part of it.
I don't think I'd buy anything else now.My ONLY complaint would be once it gets soaked it takes a while to dry.

Maybe if you wrapped it in a towel and stepped on it it would soak up some of the moisture? But yeah they take a while.

This morning I was watching Ken McNabb and he was with Prof. Choice. there was a newer girth they make that has perforated holes to breathe and it is a wider polyethelene? cinch. He said it also has give so the horse can breathe.
