Combination of...

My mom and I have been taking things from all these great clinicians:
Mark Rashid
Kathleen Lindley
The Parelli's
Harry Whitney
GaWaNi Pony Boy
Joe Camp
Tom Moates
Scott Stokes
Leslie Desmond
Ray Hunt

So many great horsemen out there! Lots to learn! Lots to learn!

That's a good list.  I'd add Mark Russell, Riding in Lightness.  It's a great education in supling and conditioning and natural collection.

Yes, I agree there are more great people to learn from than we can count.  But just remember two important things.....

1.  The best teacher is your horse(s).  Listen to them, think about what they are trying to say to you and think about what you, yourself are doing......

2.  Question everything said to you by everyone.  Don't take anything as "gospel".  Everyone does some things right and some things wrong.   For instance don't discard Parelli Natural Horsemanship because Pat/Linda made a mistake, did something wrong and won't admit it.  Pats original programme is an excellent base....There are many things done by the vaqueros and other respected teachers that I totally disagree with.

It is a fantastic journey.  I am now 67 years old and I am still learning, still enjoying learning and setting goals for our next summer - I am in New Zealand so our seasons are the opposite of yours.  Have a fantastic life and enjoy every moment of it.

Thanks for these lists.

@Carol, do you mean this one: "Lessons in Lightness: The Art of Educating the Horse"?
I'm always looking for new books, and never heard of Mark Russell
Niek

yes thats the one. good book
PasoBaby_CarolU

Yes, that's right...thanks Niek.

That book is an excellent education in SOFTLY getting an athletic horse.

We just put that book on THE LIST.  All these great teachers make for a good recipe.  A little of this, a little of that, according to what your horse responds best to.  The only one I'm not finding any value in is Clinton Anderson, but that's just me.

Clinton Anderson, in my opinion, substitutes big movements and methods of intimidation for having to dig deeper and use his energy and more subtle modes of communication. I personally think that is a lazy mode of training and creates push button horses who can't really think for themselves. But that's just me too.

Mark Russell's site lists an interesting DVD, Riding with Chi.  Has anyone seen that one?

I'd add Buck Brannaman and Brent Graef to the opening list.  Also some local trainers, like Kitty Lauman in Oregon.  I love Mark Rashid and Leslie Desmond.  I have some Ray Hunt videos and love to watch him. Also have a couple of Tom Dorrance videos that are real gems.  Bill Dorrance's True Horsemanship through Feel is the one and only 'bible' I ascribe to.

Exactly! I agree! I think Level 1 and Level 2 new/old/somewhat original/red/blue are fantastic! Totally worth every penny!

I'm just so excited to start learning more! Just had a great play time with Eddie this morning and it took a little while, but then we were both so light!!!

I'll definitely look into Mark Russell too!
