DMSOWhat is it used for?
What about ichthammol?

DMSO is used to relieve joint pain. It has a very unique capability of penetrating the skin and traveling directly to and inside the joint, which topicals don't have. If you put a drop of iodine in a few drops of DMSO in your palm, when you turn your hand over the DMSO will have carried the iodine through to the back of your hand.
You have to be VERY careful with DMSO, since it will carry ANY/EVERY chemical that is also on the skin INTO the limb you are treating. Make sure the limb is thoroughly clean and no residue of other treatments or medications are on the surface.
Wear gloves.

What exactly is DMSO? The drug name I mean. I'm assuming it is a pharmaceutical drug. Does it have a human use equivilant?

Dimethyl sulfoxide - yes, there are many human lotions and potions that contain it. Just a FAIR WARNING. If you get it on your skin you will taste it with a few seconds. After that it will reach threshold and you won't notice it yourself, but you will smell like it for several days, or as long as you use it.

At the track we used to use it all the time, and this is before they said you should wear gloves and a mask. Most people would slap it on with their hands. I always figured if I could taste something within a second of touching it, I didn't want it in my system - I always wore gloves and used a brush.

I use it on swellings. Jill is allergic to bug bites and every now and then she'll get a nasty one that really swells. I just put a circle of it around the swelling and it helps it go away faster. I've also used it for abscesses. I put it and nitrofurizone (sp?) on the bottom of the foot and then diaper it and leave it until the diaper falls off...it works pretty darn well.

Re: DMSOWhat about ichthammol?
It is a drawing salve. It is used in humans to bring out a boil. In horses, the only thing I have used it for is to draw an abscess out of a hoof. It is black and greasy and smells like motor oil.

It's this bright yellow goop...someone else might need to explain it lol...I know it's a heating agent, so you would use it to make a sweat as opposed to a liniment which would make the leg cold.

RE: Nitrofurazone aka Fura-zone.
The following I copied from the result of a Google search some time ago:
"...product which contains a known carcinogen is Fura-zone a first aid ointment for dogs and horses. This yellow ointment has on the label the following warning: "HUMAN WARNINGS; Carcinogenesis: Nitrofurazone has been shown to produce mammary tumors in rats and mice. Some people may be hypersensitive to this product. Either wear gloves when applying, or wash hands afterwards."
This product is also banned for use on animals intended for human consumption. Not that any of my animals are intended for human consumption.
It is way too toxic for me and my horse. I quit using it years ago.

DMSO is a very powerful cleaning solvent. Need I say more?
Re: Furazone - me too, Marty.

I must mention DMSO to my doctor to see if there is a human product containing it that will help my left shoulder to repair better. Or perhaps I should just go to my nearest racing stables & ask for some linament!

Perhaps you could get your hands on some Release by Dynamite.

I have no doubt there's a vet or two that could hook you up with something There was one that would even do joint injections on people, knees or shoulders or whatever you needed I've had my share of stitches done by vets, probably more than by people doctors LOL

Just do a Google search on DMSO. You'll find hundreds of products with it in it. Here's one, but there are plenty of others.

There is a lot of controversy about using it on humans. You might read some of the health benefits and risks before using it.

In the logging industry they mix DMSO with dye, paint it on the cut end of the tree & it travels all the way up the tree. It will carry anything with it. Scares the hell outta me. My dad used to use it on our bruises when we were kids, makes them heal really fast. Tastes like garlic, and you will taste it in about 30 seconds. I have some for the horses, but have never used it & probably never will.

Its popular on tendon swellings/damage in the UK, they call it cortosweating, you paint it on the leg and wrap with cling film under a bandage

Ask your doctor about MSM, which was developed by Stanley Jacob,MD, from its mother compound DMSO. Read about the relationship between MSM and DMSO at this link: www.nwhealthsolutions.com/arthritisfoundationMSM-DMSO.html
MSM is not species specific. I give Dynamite's MSM to my mare. According to Dynamite, "research has shown that MSM has been an effective supplement for joint pain, muscle soreness, heart function, skin problems, anti-inflammatory, circulation, and much more."
My understanding is that MSM has not been shown to rebuild or repair. For those issues, I have used Dynamite's Free and Easy, which is described as "a synergistic supplement formula designed to supply the joints, cartilage and ligaments with a complete spectrum of nutritional building blocks along with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components".
Free and Easy includes Chondroitin and Glucosamine.

Since Dynamite was already mentioned, when my pony impaled herself on a corral panel pin, my vet told me to smear DMSO around the wound to help with swelling. As always, I nodded my head and smiled.
Then right after she left, I headed for the Release and the Wound Balm. Healed in almost 4 weeks and the vet was amazed. I never did tell her I ignored her instructions.

Wound Balm is almost magical in what it can help heal. Having said that, I'm not sure what it can accomplish in healing a shoulder injury with connective tissue/ligament/tendon issues. Perhaps assist in drawing out toxins. And enhancing circulation to the site.

I would think rubbing on some Release would be perfect for that. I don't go anywhere without Release. Ever. A spray bottle is sitting on my desk right beside me now. Using it since yesterday when something apparently bit me on the finger when I was putting out hay. Swelling was down within an hour and now it's calming the itching.
I love that stuff.

My Vet told me to do a DMSO sweat on my horse Finnagans HoclK for 2 weeks-- he injured himself a while a go and it is still swollen-- I think it is actually helping-- he no longer looks lame -- but he is still not 100%. I was really skeptical of the stuff also-- and I told the Vet that-- but she said it was worth a try-- so I am trying it.
What is Release????

Release is a Dynamite product that we call Liquid Acupuncture - all natural spray good for so many things. I got bitten by some fire ants on my hand on Saturday so I sprayed some Release and rubbed it in. Then I brushed on some Miracle clay to draw the pain out which it did.
Release can be used on swelling, bruises, around stitches, pre- and post-massage, etc. I snort it when I get sinus infections. I gave a bottle to my trimmer and he absolutely fell in love with it. He uses it on horses who are stiff and giving him a hard time about picking up their hooves. He sprays them, rubs it in and then waits about 10 minutes. He says it definitely helps.
It's multi-species so it can be used on any being. https://www.dynamitemarketing.com/5116 - search under Horse Products for Release.

I wonder if there is a way to find a comparable product here in Australia to those named here in this thread.
Many products are sold in several countries under different names. The trick would be to have some idea of what you are looking for!
