Does anyone know about..

My farrier was talking about a hoof problem he has seen a few times now, the frogs don't grow and are particularly weak and the hoof is yellowish in a white foot when you trim it back. He was wondering whether my horse has this rather than just thrush, but he has black feet, and can't remeber the name of it! Any ideas what he is thinking of?

canker?
Julie

Not sure, he has only ever seen it three times, vet has no treatment, but  improvement when shoes removed? Could be canker!

The only thing I can think of that could affect general hoof growth in its entirety, is a nutritional issue.  Vitamin or mineral deficiency.  That is NOT to say that the horse isn't experiencing a metabolic issue, and that a by product would be yellowing hoof wall and inferior frog growth.  Pictures of the sole (clean and DRY) would be helpful.  Right now it is like holding your horse up to the phone so your vet can diagnose him.  Canker should be pretty focal in its earlier stages.  It can get crazy bad though.  It is hard to tell by your verbal description alone.

So, my;  I haven't seen the horse- over the internet -hail mary pass to the end-zone reccomendation....

A combination of these two steps...

Hay analysis through a lab such as equi-analytical, and a follow up nutritional consultation with someone like Katy Watts or Eleanor Kellon, or one of their certified graduates.  (Careful, there are people charging money for consultations as Kellon Grads., that aren't and I am sure it happens with Katy Watts students as well).

Secondly, a Vet visit with a good blood work-up, and physical.

I could add, knock those shoes off, but, why state the obvious....

Keep in touch, and if your farrier remembers more about what he thought he saw, fill us in.  This is usually a good place to learn.

Now, if it is more like what is described by Dr. O'Grady, you have a bit of work to do.  Here is a link with Canker info.

Hope things work out.

I think a lot like Dennis.   When I think yellow I think liver.  What are the horses other whites like..the sclera around the eye?
Julie

The farrier does not think it is canker - yet, but is concerned over the two bad frogs. His hooves are all fine, and one front hoof is very good, with the other front showing a small amount of frog change, but the backs are very odd with loads of fissures.

I have 4 horses all on the same feed and pasture, one is barefoot with solid feet and frogs, one has great feet and front shoes, one has all shoes as he shortens his stride without shoes. All of their frogs are wide and flat and healthy, but they are highlands with typical good highland feet. its only the one who is a different breed!

Will take some photos.

Is it the sole that looks yellow? As in a stretched white line?

The white line looks yellow-if it is really stretched, it could make the hoof look 'yellow'
Julie

No  - sole looks fine and white line is not stretched, the hoof itself looks fine, and much more solid that in the summer. The other horses he has treated looked yellowish in the sole when trimmed, Josh does not look like that, the frog is just deteriorating. We have treated with antibiotic spray, and a clay medicated cream, it does not smell of thrush at all, all the excess exfoliating frog has been trimmed away so as I can treat the holes.

he does not know if its canker, but he was concerned that it could be the start of it in the frogs.
Leah

Fissures?

Yellow sole-as in waxy? Like trimming to live sole?

Methinks we are going to need photos.
Julie

Will take pics, shoes coming off in three weeks time anyway
