Don't Shoot the DogJust wanted to share a link.
This past week I posted a review on my blog of Karen Pryor's book Don't Shoot the Dog.
http://stalecheerios.com/blog/boo...dvd-reviews/dont-shoot-dog-pryor/
I've read this book several times and really love it.
It's also the first one I recommend to people if they want more info about clicker training and positive reinforcement training.
Don't Shoot the Dog is about a lot more than just clicker training, though. There's a lot of good info in it. The book is a fun read, a bit of theory and lots of stories and examples. The stories and examples cover dogs, cats, humans, horses, zoo animals, and so on.
Not much actual "how to" but it's a good introduction to how training works, how to break down behavior into smaller parts when teaching, and how to be a problem solver to come up with training solutions and ideas.

Super book for anyone who wants to learn more about animal behaviour. Easy to read, fast moving.
Also her most recent book:
REACHING THE ANIMAL MIND.

Thanks for adding that, Hertha.
Reaching the Animal Mind is a great read as well. Lots of good info in there.
Hertha, have you read Lads Before the Wind? I'm sure you would enjoy it if you haven't! It's from Karen's early days, when she was training dolphins. When she started training dolphins, she didn't know anything about dolphin training. The book is full of stories and really has a sense of discovery, which is what I like about it. Also, even though it's about dolphins, most of the ideas and stories can be related back to horse training.

Hi Mary,
I've across the title but haven't read it. Will keep an out out for a copy. Our libraries down here don't tend to have that kind of book, so probably have to get it on Amazon.
There aren't a lot of books that I feel are 'must reads' for anyone with animals in their lives, but I would add Karen Pryor to Konrad Lorenz's boks
MAN MEETS DOG and
KING SOLOMON'S RING

Fabulous book, if you want to get deeper into the psychology of positive reinforcement.

Hertha,
You could probably get a used copy for cheap on Amazon, although I know international shipping can be more expensive.
