extra bit of hoof hanging off?

What is this and what should we do about it?

It is definitely hoof material.

This the the front view of the horse's back right.

He is 5-8 years old (?? wouldn't let me get a good look at his teeth).

Not sure if he's ever been trimmed. He let me pick up a front foot after I messed with him for a bit, but acted like our young horses do who have had zero foot handling.

what does it look loke from the side view?  Regardless, it's like having a hang nail and that needs to be taken care of,  Since it appears to be attached only at the coronary band, you should trim it back as much as possible without causing a leak.  Better yet, it would be a good idea to have the vet come out, chemically restrain the horse, and then sut it back all the way.  This will probably cause bleeding and will necessitate  bandaging, but sooner or later, it will have to be done or it will just keep growing back.  Of course, since I can't really see what is going on, I could be mmistaken.  (hey, anything's possible )

Cheerios I’ve seen that happen after a horse in my working string got a bad wire cut that cut the heel & went into the cornet band. A piece of horn began to grow down & out separate from the rest of the hoof. I used to just trim my horse’s bit back to very close to the hair line then rasp with the fine side of rasp to the hair line & tried to keep it that short so it didn’t get caught & tear & bleed.

In the photo it looks like it might have happened many years ago. I have heard of those growths being excised by the vet with good results. I guess it depends on the worth of the horse whether you want to pay for a vet or just trim it yourself.
