Faraway HorsesLast night before bed I was reading Buck Brannaman's book, "Faraway Horses". I was on page 178 & it occurred to me, Buck's one of us. He may express things differently but all throughout his book he mentions God. He also on page 178 talks about the soul (horse & human).
I have to admit when the book first started & he spoke of the trails & tribulations of surviving his abusive father... I wasn't sure I'd make it. Just broke my heart but that seemed to teach him how to deal with horses who've been abused. He approaches the horse with the same understanding that he needed as an abused child.
Amazingly wonderful book. And I see Buck in a whole different light. Amazing that he survived to adulthood.

That book is being made into a movie. Should be a winner.

One of my favorites; do you know if the movie has been cast or who will play him?

Mike, it ought to be a good movie. I also enjoyed reading his perspective of what he saw Ray Hunt do when 2 guys brought him a colt expecting to best Ray.
jackspark, I could see Kevin Costner playing Buck.

Great book, and I kinda wish Buck would play Buck. Gotta be someone that gets horses. Not something you can fake.

Maybe Buck could be played by Viggo Mortensen?

I could go for Costner Peep! He might be good as Buck too

Viggo does get horses, doesn't he? The woman I rode with in Mammoth had a friend that lived next door to where he kept that horse. I wanted to go down and visit with him, I think his name is Scout. I loved that horse in Hildago, and it really impressed me that Viggo bought him after the movie was made. Isn't it amazing how many horse movies are coming out?

A movie based on Buck's life could catapult Buck into celebrity status if it's highly successful. Would that be good for him in the short term? What about long term?

He already IS a celebrity! (in the right circles!)
There is a documentary coming out on him, I look forward to it!

I LOVE the book! I cried many times. Especially when his Mom died. You just kinda' see the difference in every kid's eye afterwards. You know, like try to save some toddler being drug all over the store by one arm?
There is website, where a man tells about how Ray and Carolyn Hunt kinda' took Buck in as young man when Buck become a buckaroo at a Ranch Ray came to frequently and sometimes lived at. It sure seems Buck was always Ray's favorite.
Don't you think Buck is too humble to play himself? Of course he would be a consultant for sure. It could change his life, celebrity wise. Isn't it odd Pat Parelli would die to have this happen. Pat even made his own documentary of himself, Zero To Hero. Of course, Buck was celebrity once. A renown child roper appearing with his brother at the Rodeos. Thanks to a hours of practice from the abused Father (and natural talent) He even appeared on a cereal box at that time. Buck still is a very talented roper.

There was a camera crew following him around to his clinics last summer filming for the documentary. I had heard it was going to have a 2010 release. I'll call Kathleen, she's at his ranch this week. She can get us the up-to-the-minute scoop!

I always forget Viggo. He'd be a good candidate too. Either one would be good. I can't really see Buck playing himself. Can't see it. He strikes me as being too humble. But if the actor had to do the rope tricks... I'm thinking that ain't gonna happen without Buck
I don't know, I could be wrong but I have a hard time seeing the guy from this book getting a big head from things like fame. I'd be real disappointed if got $$ & fame & morphed into a bonehead. Being a legend in your own mind is dangerous

There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Buck will ever transform into a money mongering publicity hog.
Here's the peeps that's doing the documentary. You can sign up for updates and release date, etc!

| I wasn't suggesting that but celebrity could still affect what others expect from him.
Viggo Mortensen seems like the logical choice to me.

I have a crush on Buck. Saw him a few years ago in Indianapolis at the Hoosier Horse Fair, love his voice. Actually told a group of women and little kids in front of me to please be quiet. Big Crush, BIG BIG. If a movie comes out and he plays himself I will have to own it. Don't tell my husband.

Well, we're both right! I just got off of the phone with Kathleen.
They are doing a documentary on Buck AND a movie based on his book "The Faraway Horses"!
The documentary is scheduled to be released in 2011. The filming is done and they are in production.
The movie is in the works. Kathleen said that Buck didn't talk much about either, but did answer questions when he was asked.
For those that haven't read the book, I'll just tell you that the name comes from his youngest daughter asking why he's always gone (to clinics, working, riding, etc). from page 3:
| Quote: | | My youngest daughter still asks, "Why, Daddy, do you have to go and ride the faraway horses?" |
Melts my heart. And lucky for us, just like Ray, he does continue to ride the 'faraway horses'.
