Free to Roam - MustangsA friend who gentles Mustangs posted this on Facebook. I thought I'd share it. It is a documentary of the Mustangs and what happened before the BLM started managing and protecting the herds. Pay close attention to the Mustangers and their part in the Mustang's history. Then you understand why the laws protecting and managing the herds are there, and why it is critical to both protect AND manage.
In short, if you love mustangs, adopt some.

I agree with most of the video BUT that is only parts of the story going on now from what I have read. Many, if not all stallions, in a herd are sterile and the females in many herds are being given shots to not reproduce. The BLM is hurting the genetics of these herds. Some of the herds that have been in long term holding have had absolutely no hoof care. There have been photos posted of horrendously long feet in filthy conditions. The numbers compared to cattle in a lot of areas is so few compared to what used to be. I can't believe taking horses off the land and holding them is going to be the answer to feeding the poor Come on. They are spending millions to feed, farrier, hold, round up, sterilize these animals and that is doing what? I understand the numbers have to be contained but they are going way overboard. The helicopters run these horses to death sometimes, foals aborted, and live foals keel over. How about introducing some mountain lions to keep them in check? In parts of NV I understand the BLM has put up fences to keep them from the water sources but the cattle have water. This is public/federal land. Someone is putting money up front to have this land for cattle. I have no doubt. It is always about the money!
This is near and dear to my heart. I hope to adopt one soon. There are many things that just aren't true in that clip, though.
