Ga Wa Ni PonyboyI have been watching this forum off and on. I haven't seen any of you mention Ponyboy and wondered if any have studied him and his spiritual horsemanship. I live with many Indians nearby and have spent some time with the Navajo people. I have family members who are Navajo.
I don't buy into Indian horsemanship being better or more natural then any other, but the American Indians who are close to their native beliefs do have a more spiritual relationship with the earth and the animals on it.
It seems like a natural step to take on this path.

He is neither pony, nor boy. Not sure if he is even Native American. Last I heard, he owns a hotel somewhere...

He sounds really interesting. He has a bitless bridle that looks comfortable too. Sadly he is not close to me or going to be close any time soon. *sigh*

Mike your comments on PonyBoy reflect my gut reaction any time I've seen him or tried to read his stuff. I don't know why.
The majority of my genetic makeup is American Indian. Granted I'm a mixed mutt from various tribes. None of my folks believe their heritage made them better than anyone else at anything but both sides - no matter what their tribal makeup - believe that some familial lines pass on certain things.
I will have to reread my book from PonyBoy. I liked the book better before I saw him in person but maybe he's 'putting it on' a little thick for the crowd. Maybe that's what bothered me. I dunno.

When I had just bought my horse and problems started to occur I contacted his licenced instructor who is not far away. I had read his step by step and follow me closely books and had liked them, but his method is not very spectacular and not really something you can work with on your own. I told the insturctor my problems and that I'd love to have some private lessons.
I was told he needed a round pen of 2 metres height, a solid one, not something just built of electric fence. It needed a certain diameter and certain heighth and a few things more.
I said I couldn't provide that as it is not my own barn and I can't go and build solid round pens where I want, but that we have a nice small arena (it's 12m x 25m which is very nice for liberty work, in fact) and if this might do, and he told me no, he can only work with a horse when this certain round pen is provided...
I then thought well if he cannot work with a horse otherwise, then this is not the kind of competence to work with my smart horse...
and went to home study Parelli on my own .

I think it's funny today, but then I didn't because I was really looking for help desperatedly
I have to say I DO like the book Horse Follow closely, just for its nice pictures (taken by Boiselle I believe) - I like to leaf through it once in a while.

I don't think his owning a hotel means he is not a good horseman. And I also like his books, for the pictures and the things it says. However, I find other methods, dvd-wise, to be more helpful and clear in how to work with horses. For me, if I can't replicate it on my own with my own horse, it isn't much help to me. I can't afford much in the way of clinics, unless they are close to where I live. (Luckily, I'll be going to a Brent Graef clinic since he'll be in my area.) I rely mostly on what I glean from DVDs and books, and it has to be clear enough so I can try it on my own.
So, I like G. Ponyboy, I like his dvds and his books, but other than being something nice to leaf through, as BuffaloBill says, I can't say I've really found anything unique or incredibly useful. I do like the feel of the books and the pictures very much, and that has been inspiring to a degree.

I rented a DVD once, it was okay and showed some good technique...but when I hear of 'Native American horseman', I want to learn the things that historically, the indians did that were different that allowed them to ride and do what they did with their horses (riding in cherokee bridles, hanging off of their sides to avoid gunfire by the white men, etc) LOL!
