Gelding using his "equipment!"

My little mare has been in the dry lot turnout with 4 other geldings including ours.  Spice has been coming into heat regularly despite getting implants to prevent it.  I think that the vet may have just under estimated her weight.  Anyway she is being "bred" by one of the young geldings.  Hubby tells me that all his "equipment" was working just like a stallion!  Should I be worried?  Take her out of there?  She really needs exercise and it is too extremely hot right now in the desert for riding.  (116 degrees last week, went all the way down to 110 today!)  Any thoughts?

I've had geldings that jumped, but about 30 years ago I had a colt that I bred and had gelded by a very good vet. His testicles were smaller then normal, but everything looked ok (he was a Arabian and that particular breeding line did have small ones) Any how, he still displayed stallion behavior, had him checked and the Vet said some "cord" may still be in there, and he gelded him again. That dang horse would jump mares with all his equipment out for the rest of his life (25 years) But, here's the good part, -he never got one pregnant. Hope that helps.

To answer your question about Spice, yes I'd be worried.   My gelding Diablo 'bred' Baby, my hand raised mare, and ripped her.  So, it can hurt the mare internally and externally.  Additionally, the geldings might fight over her, and she could get caught in the crossfire and injured.

My old gelding Trooper has lived with Baby for 23 years and never any hint of sexuality by either of them.  I introduced a 2nd mare who was a total hussy during heat cycles, backing up into Trooper and even urinating on him.  He finally gave in and bred her, and it's the only time I've ever seen him do anything....so, it's not always the gelding's fault.

Scout was gathered at 3, past sexual maturity.  There is a hussy at our barn who goes by the name of Pretentious.  Scout thinks he can still do something for her.

Kelsey's mare went right into heat and decided that Hawk was her kind of guy.  Poor Hawkie did everything but breed her.  He was so excited that another horse LIKED him, because none of the horses ever did.  They are inseparable, now.  She was relentless in her affection.  It was embarrassing, lol!  "Hey, get a box stall!"

Spice is definitely the aggressor here!  She rules the roost.  We've put her back in her stall, but she isn't happy about it.  She's not getting exercise either because it's far to hot right now.  Maybe I'll put her back in the turnout after her heat cycle.  So this isn't the only gelding whose parts work!

Well, I had a half-Arab, half-saddlebred mare that was always in season, but never would take.  My gelding was taught my his mother how to mount her.  He did at two and would wait till I had company and make it show and tell time....   Like 5 times in a row.

She has moved to another farm due to allergy issues, but I got to see the whole lesson 'See son, this is how you do it.'

Oh well, life on the farm.  Kinda laid back!
