Shaun has some patches of lost hair, anyone have an idea? No scabs or raised areas........ just small areas of loss along his left shoulder and up the side of his neck. also not linear or related to scaring or injury.

Baby is my old gray mare and gets a similar condition for the past several years. I've had it plated several times and it's never shown anything on a slant. If it's mild I can clear it up with Listerine. If that doesn't work, MTG works every time (but it stinks). She gets it every spring anymore.

Could it be an allergic reaction to some sort of bug bite? Tick?

I was just talking with someone who used MTG and her horse was allergic to the sulfer in it. All the hair fell out of her horse's mane and tail where she had applied it. She said that the hair even fell out where the horse's tail landed on her sides. On some places it even blistered and was seeping like a burn. She had to get the vet out to see what to do about it. Scary!

I've used MTG before on my horse and it was ok...but now I am going to be careful when I use it on any other horse and just apply it to a small spot first.

What is MTG? What causes the hair to fall out? I don't think it's an allergic response because there are none of the accompanying signs.

Listerine? What is the reason that works? Thanks for the info!

I must need new glasses, I can't see any hair loss

Of course, I am on my phone which could be causing my lack of sight.
Chlorhexaderm worked WONDERS on my special needs TB. Nothing came back on his scrapings either. Had about five different vets look at him including Davis. Turned out he was allergic to Oak Trees. Been fine with them his whole life and then just after he got Lymphingitis, everything seemed to be going wrong. His immunity just got shot and he became a special needs horse to say the least. Moved him to my place and there weren't oak trees to bother him, we Chlorhexadermed the heck out of him if he ever got itchy (allergic to vetrolyn turns out too) and he gained weight, gained hair and is now happy as can be and is competing with his new mom who loves him. Sound and happy as can be at 22 years old. Sometimes they just, for some reason or another, develope allergies. I suppose it is like us humans who are fine around chemicals and one day a walk through the cleaning aisle at the grocery store becomes a bit too much.

This probably isn't what your gelding has at all but thought I would share my experience in case anyone else out there has the same symptoms my TB had. I get a lot of learning done from other people's experiences

Appreciate it Em. I just would think that an allergy would cause some heat, scratching, raised swelling or something like that. These are just flat, cool, dime sized/quarter sized areas of loss.

I'm not terribly concerned, he is 26 and we are bound to continue having issues, just anticipating possible problems this winter

If the loss is circular it sounds like maybe ringworm. ( not actually a worm, it's a fungus ) be carful it spreads very easy. Use an Antifugal, There are several on the market, MTG may be one, it contains Sulfur which stinks and some animals may have a reaction to. I tink it works great!

Wash any brushes you use and tack or it can spread to your other animals and wash your hands as you can get it also.
