Have you all ever heard of this?

Got a ? real fast..
I had someone suggest this to me and wanted to know if any of you have ever heard of it..
Jet's barefoot, I had someone tell me that if I mixed 1/2 Iodine and 1/2 Mineral spirits, or was it oil.. anyway, that if i mixed those 2 things and painted jet's soles with it, that it would toughin them.

I have not done this, but I am curious if there's any truth to it..

I have not heard of it.  I think it would be mineral spirits instead of oil though.  Spirits would dry the sole out, oil would soften it up, which is the opposite of what you want.

Here is an information sheet on Durasole, which is the product I used with great success:

The iodine would work on the thrush also.  I have no idea what mineral spirits would do for the sole.   It is a mild solvent and has little affect on tissue except maybe as a drying agent.

Yep, I have... but then we used to use old tractor oil to paint up horses feet at the track too.  Wind me up on that one

The thing I use to toughen feet is Jimmy Rickens formula.  Its got a bunch of stuff in it, stains your hands like crazy, but does seem to work.  Just on the sole and frog, I squirt it on and use an old tooth brush to move it around.

Thank you very much Ladies!!!

The vet who xray'd Sonny's front feet said they make up a brew to harden feet made of Iodine & something else. He said when they make it up as a vet's prescription type of thing, it doesn't cost much at all. Apparently no where near what retail hoof treatments cost.

My OTT TB came with a glass bottle of solution with a brush attached to the lid to paint his soles with.  It is called "Strong Iodine".  I used it when I first got him, but haven't used it in about 4 years now.

You can't get the Iodine OTC in the strength you need anymore.  Thanks to meth labs.

Just by Durasole, it works wonders and it's cheap (it has iodine in it).

50:50  solution, 7% Iodine: Formalin.   The Iodine I got from the feed store (7% tincture of iodine) and the Formalin you can get from your Vet.  It is the solution used to preserve tissue samples from biopsies that get sent to the lab.

Equine Vets may use this, because the stuff tends to be in the clinic, so why pay for a brand name.  I can get it from my vet easily because I just say, honey bring home some formalin.  You may find it easier to just get the Durasol product.

I have a bottle of it made up. . .still haven't had a use for it.
