Hertha's introJust had an enjoyable time reading everyone's introductions. What a wonderful variety of backgrounds.
When I was six I had my first ride on a big black horse. From then on I was hooked. My biggest regret is that natural horsemanship wasn't around visibly when I was young. What a lot of fun and learning I missed out on.
Hitting the big 60 in a week or so. Got my Level 1 in 1998 with my 'lifetime horse' who I had for over 20 years. He went to horse heaven and it is only now that I am appreciating just how special he was.
After a few horseless years I couldn't stand it any more so got a middle aged throughbred looking for a home and an eighteen month old three/quarter quarter horse, both mares.
Dusted off the old Parelli gear and notes and away we went. Quite traumatic at first but they have taught me heaps and it gets better every day. Even the down parts of the graph are creating interest rather than anxiety.
My TB can't canter extensively to the left due to a past injury so I'm playing in Level 2 with my young horse, Boots. She is strongly LBI. We've almost finished the old Level 2. Have to see what the story is now.
I studied zoology and was a zookeeper for a while. Then handled animals in movies, followed by teaching biology and science for 23 years. Realised I was't going to have the stamina to keep that up indefinitely so I retrained into library and information science and now work 24 hours a week in a high school library. This is excellent as it gives me every morning to play horses.
I have one son who is about to marry his sweetheart of 9 years (they had adjoining rooms in the hostel during first year uni). She is a horse person who's never had a horse and whenever they come for the weekend we are out there playing.
My husband is supportive but not a horse person. He does wonderful things like keep the sand arena groomed and the grass arena mowed and this year he mowed me a cloverleaf pattern into our hay paddock.
A big interest in my teaching career was writing user-friendly resources. In April I got lonely doing Parelli by myself and cast about for some people who might be interested.
Found a wonderful woman who was willing to be my guinea pig for learning level one stuff. I wrote a workbook to support our weekly play sessions. She got a friend interested who got a friend interested who got a friend interested.
Soon we'll have enough for a party! Writing the workbook was a good way to force me to think things through as is playing with other people and their horses.
I live in a beautiful valley on 5 acres. Have three neighbouring farms to ride on and 2 miles down the road is a rural showground with a roomy sand arena and lots of things to explore. As close to heaven as I can hope for.
I might soon be planning my hoist to get my saddle on my horse like Bill Dorrance, but I'll be out there!
