Holy cow!Last minute but think I'm heading south to go gather cattle, sort and help with some of the ground stuff. Calves are getting castrated and dehorned. At a clinic you MAY get to work two or three cows. I get to sort TONS of cows and calves. TONS! I was just thinking how I really missed working cows and here we go! It is so fun, you guys! So much better than a clinic! It's the real thing! I'm so excited!

That's funny Deb. I'm going to read this to some local friends who are ranchers. They quite honestly won't believe it.

Cow work Friday and Saturday! Can you believe it? I might even learn how to rope something. Probably the wrong thing, but still...cows! Two days of cows! Lots of cows! And I have my camera! And my new saddle! And my new bridle with a parachute cord macate! whoo hoo!

Ms. Bit will be back at it again, with Shaun stashed in the round pen. Wish I could take Eclipse, but she's in school. I do get to ride her this weekend at a clinic. Jenny is going to trailer her up for me with her horse, and I can play with her then. I miss her like crazy. She is a good cow horse, and real different than Bit. Ecipse is all pinned ears and teeth Bit is polite, and asks the heifers to "please move your butts". It's actually better Bit's way. Cows liked Bit quite a bit. They're scared of Eclipse.

Looks nice!
How much does it weigh?

I think they said around 24 pounds. That's doable for me. The tree is small and made for a woman. They made it well, and made it to weigh as little as possible. This will be the first western saddle I haven't had to turn the stirrups sideways so the things will fit. Most saddles won't adjust as short as I am. I will be taking it to a clinic this weekend to make sure it fits Ms. Eclipse. Hopefully she's lost some weight and everything will fit just fine.

Bit that’s great that you are getting some cow work. Just think, I did it for a living in my teens. Very hard, hot, dusty, smelly, strenuous work, but well worth the effort.
Would have been a whole lot more of a great experience if I didn't have to stave off lecherous, obscene, octypus armed men all the damned time

Just spent the weekend moving and sorting cows down south. Funny how one little cow clinic can wake up such a crazy passion. Mine's cows. Your intent and focus becomes like a lazer, and it just draws your horse into it, just as focused and intent as you are. My usual tense, reactive, spooking mare was moving the herd in 30 mph winds, rain, ugly cold tems, just as soft and collected as you please. I'm betting it was a change in me, not her that made that happen. Best thing I could have ever done for my horsemanship.
When I'm doing cows, there's no worrying about what my horse might spook at, if she's with me, nothing like that. I'm wondering if draw might be bigger than just physically bringing your horse to you. When my focus and intent is so sharp that nothing else exists BUT moving that cow, or moving that herd, my horse gets sucked right into it. She's drawn into that bubble of intent, and she's as focused as I am.
When you are in a race course (skiing) you don't hear anything, you don't feel cold, you don't see anything but the course. It's almost a crazy paralle universe where only you and the mountian exist. It's the same with cows for me. I think it's why I like it so much. The ultimate "in the moment" experience.
Last night was one of the coldest nights I've had in a long time. My little heater didn't do squat. Ugly cold. I got us loaded and home as soon as I could this morning. I now know how to dehorn, give shots, and tag calves. No, I don't want to know how to castrate. I will never eat a rocky mountain oyster. What a great day. Rode home in the dark. Crazy wind. Bit was amazing.
