Yes, actually. Try riding in England and not having to do a lot of roadwork. It's impossible.
But my horses are barefoot, so that's just fine..

Here's some more barefoot horse action. Lots of mixed terrain in England, roads, tracks, moor... but always at least some road work.

When I was young, I lived in Salt Lake County and rode everywhere down sidewalks and along roadsides. I rode Tina probably 3-8 hours a day. I wore off a set of shoes every 4 weeks. There is no way she could have been barefoot and ridden like that.
I believe in barefoot whenever practical. But I don't believe in limiting my activities just so my horse can go barefoot. I also don't believe in riding a barefoot horse that is in pain JUST so I can be "natural" and I have seen plenty of horses lay down because they had sore feet. To me, it all depends on the horse's feet, the horse's use, and if it works for the horse. As they say, "Never say Always"...

I think that's the oddest thing about the barefoot "movement". WHY is it something to brag about? Your horse being barefoot is no big deal. If a horse can get by without shoes, that's great, but I certainly won't hesitate to protect his feet. I mean, I just don't see any of these barefoot zealots jogging down gravel roads without shoes, giving someone a piggyback ride.....

Then again we don't have toe nails that cover the whole underneath & sides of our feet. I do know of many people whose toenails could be mistaken for hooves if they did grow right around the foot!

Not a zealot, but our horses all do several laps on our stone walk several times a week. It's about 15' X 80' and 12" deep.

Mandy and I trotting...not jogging...down a gravel road during the Raptor Run 25 mile endurance race October 15 in the Bankhead National Forest, Alabama. She was barefoot. No shoes, no boots. Very technical, rugged terrain. Finished in the top ten; our best completion score yet. Not bad for a horse that foundered last year--spent 10 months in rehabilitation--due to endophyte fungus toxicity.
