Lila Harding Horse Coach

Horsey in Utah Hello I am new

Hello Members,
My name is Lila Harding and my soul is bonded to horses.
I won a busniess called Holy Horse Encounters, and I hope the name gives you a sense of how I feel about horses.  As a trainer and coach, I create opportunities for people and horses to have heart-centered encounters and interactions for mutual growth and healing. I work with people their horses to improve connection, relationship and communication.  I have had the unique privilege to study with some horsey pioneers privately as an apprentice student.  One of the most unique people was Carolyn Resnick, whose work has greatly influenced mine. I have a coaching and training background and love to give clinics on a variety of topics.  My focus is women and horses; I also have a retreat and workshop business where I integrate folks with horses who don’t own them. Our focus in these non-equestrian retreats is personal growth, passion, leadership etc.
I feel it is an honor and a privilege to introduce people to the world of horses. -Many people never get a safe opportunity to be around horse in a magical free-form way.   I specialize in women and horses and feel that in my work, I am an ambassador for the horse and a bridge for the human/horse connection.

I had the pleasure to meet one of our moderators Carol at a horsey event here in Utah.  She told me about this group of folks.  The internet is such an amazing tool.  I hope there is a way to connect with you all as I travel across the US and abroad.  I look forward to connecting with like-minded folks who are committed to the humane and conscious treatment of our beloved horses.
I look forward to bringing value to the horse community at large and to be a contributing member of this group.
I invite people to inquire and contact me directly. I am available to speak to organizations and clubs and gladly give interviews.  I love to share about this work!!

Most Sincerely,

Lila Harding

Hi Lila and welcome!

How did you win your business pray tell?

Seriously though, I'd like you to explain this women and horses thing. On another forum I pointed out that of Buck Brannaman's stories in his book, all but one are about women. The movie about him was 100% women made. In an interview about the movie he talked about the "demographics" of his clients which are mostly women who have finished having kids and decide to live their childhood horse dreams.

What interests me is why so many turn to a guy to help them do this. You are not a guy and have plenty of customers so maybe it is just a coincidence, but maybe not. Anyhow maybe we should start a thread about this. When I raised these questions amongst Buck's female fans they got really touchy and I am not sure why.

There was an article on that subject in Western Horseman a year or so back.  It gave statistics that something like 75% of horse owners/riders are women, yet a larger percentage of trainers are men.  I don't remember the exact figure, but it was something like 90%.  I don't remember what conclusions the article made about it, but from what I've observed, most women want horses for the relationship with the horse and the social life of riding, showing, competing, etc.   There are many things about horses that can be intimidating to most women, primarily breaking young horses or dealing with problem horses.   That is where men come in.  ...and as for the 'touchy' part, I don't think a lot of women want to admit this.

Thanks Carol, that's interesting. I will look for the article in WH. I am busy putting together an equine-based leadership programme and the gender issue interests me. Tom Dorrance used to say that to work well with horses most men need more woman in them and most women need more man. I like that idea of horses bringing out the yin/yang thing in us. I do see women getting too macho and pretty rough on their horses though. What does Lila think about this?

I'll have to call her and have her check in with this thread.  She's been busy with her horse lately, so probably hasn't been on.

I agree with you on the men/women thing.   Most men need to be softer.  Most women need to be more firm (and consistent with it, not temper).   I think the worry that "But my horse won't love me." if they're firm stops a lot of women from being firm enough.  You can get away with this with many horses...but there always comes along one who pushes it and WILL push it as far as possible.
