I'm back... hopefully to stay for awhile. :)

Hi friends,

I wasn't on the forum much at all last fall.

Was SO busy with school. School's a lot of fun, but it sucks up all my time!!

I'm planning to start spending some more time here.

I have two mares that I'm starting right now at the rescue that I am having a blast with.

Also have two geldings who we started over the sumer who I've been riding some. They are teaching me a lot as well.

I just wanted to say, though, how much I love this forum.

I joined a forum a month or so ago hoping to get so info about some of my newest (non-horse) pets. Wow. So much moderation and rudeness.
That really made me miss you guys and the community here.

Hopefully school will be less busy this semester, as I've missed chatting with all of you.
Pedestal*Pony

Glad your back Mary!!  We have missed you too!  Do you have pics of your little girls?  Us all lovin pictures here will never change.

Let me go find you some pictures.

WB Mary.  We've missed you.

This is Stella.

Registered AQHA mare.

I don't have any pictures riding her yet.

She's only really had about 3 rides so far.

We're working on moving forward in the round pen and a bit of steering. Haven't done a whole lot yet.

She is very mellow and laid back, so she should make an awesome horse for trail riding or light riding once she gets a few more miles under saddle.

Probably not any really hard riding or competitions, since she's 20.

But, she's really healthy, so she has at least a few good years of riding left in her.

Very nicely bred, it's a shame no one started her before now.

This is Cheyenne, the other mare I've been starting.

There are more pictures of her here:

http://neverenuffacres.org/?p=473

5 year old chestnut paint mare.

She is a fire cracker!!

Very mellow, laid back, LB, but with a very low tolerance for things she doesn't understand.

She was adopted out at one point, but returned because she was too much horse for them. Part of her "problem" is that she is way smarter than the average horse person.

Okay.

I'll post some at some point about what I've been doing lately with my rats and mice.

The 3 male mice are new-- I got them about a month ago.

The mice aren't very happy with me right now-- they all got neutered at the end of last week.

hmmmm, that's what they say about me...she's 59 but still has a lot of good riding years left in her.  sigh.  Glad to see ya here again, missed ya!

LOL, bit.

I saw your thread about Hawk. Actually, I had seen something you had posted about him having a new home on Brent's yahoo group awhile back.

I'm sure that was a pretty hard decision for you. I know how much you love him and how much he has taught you. It sounds like he has a really awesome new home, though, and I'm really glad that you'll still get to visit him and keep up with him.

Thanks Mary, yep he's got a sweet little situation, great humans, and lots of cow work in his future.  There's always a lot going on there, so he's never real bored.  Plus he's in a herd of about 15 horses, so lots of play time.  Are ya done with school now?  Amanda is BURIED this semester with 17 units, working in the lab, and an internship.  I'm not going to see her much.  Glad life is settling down and you are getting some time.  I'm pretty happy I finally have plenty of the stuff these days.  Come visit some time!

So Mary...what are you training your mice and rats to do?  I'm curious.  I wouldn't think you could train mice to do much, but I understand rats are very smart.  I used to have pet Kangaroo Rats.  They were wild but become tame very quickly.  But they are nocturnal and drive you nuts all night.

So glad to have you back!  We missed ya

That all sounds great for Hawk.

Sounds like Amanda is busy!!!

Getting closer to being done.
Have the rest of this year and then next year. But I'll have most of my classes done by the end of this year, so next year will be just one or two classes and then working on my master's thesis and some other research and projects.

Have been doing some neat work through school lately with our local dog/cat shelter. One of the guys I go to school with does dog training professionally and he's started some neat stuff at the shelter. I've been learning a lot from him!

We're working with the dogs at the shelter, but also offering a free six week group class to anyone who adopts from the shelter. Trying to educate owners and reduce the number of dogs who get returned. Lots of clicker training. The owners end up thinking their dogs are so smart.

And, I would love to come visit sometime!

Haven't done a whiole lot with the mice yet. Have only had then about a month and they were terrified of me when I first got them. So we've been working on being friendly. They got neutered last week, so I've given them the week off, but hopefully will start some clicker training with them soon.

Search for mouse agility on YouTube. There are two women in particular who have some super well trained mice. Agility courses, basket ball, fetch, skateboarding, and so on. Really impressive stuff.

One rat I've done a lot more training with than the other.
I'm currently working on fetch with her. So frustrating! But we are starting to make some progress. At first she just wanted to run and hide the objects, which is a very natural rat behavior.

Mostly I've just been training her silly little tricks, stand up on her hind legs, go and stand on an object, turn in a circle, etc.
Here are two tricks from last fall that I made videos of:
Going through a tunnel (shows the training process too):

Going over a small jump:

Those are awesome Mary.  I really like the tunnel one, it shows the process very well.  I can believe Georgie would take the treat and hide it...we had a Wood rat (Pack rat) that got in our house years ago...it would steal dog food and put back pebbles.  Had the hardest time figuring out how the rocks got in the dog's dish.  LOL
thelmanelle

Welcome back!
Hertha

Wonderful to have you back here Mary.  I look forward to Mouse Agility in my very very old age
