How do you tell if a mare is pregnant?

My brother bought a horse and now he thinks she may be pregnant. I told them to call a vet because I did not know of any other way to tell except to wait it out...

Do they make some kind of home pregnancy tests for horses??

Call a vet or wait it out, there's not really any other options. If you think she's close to being due, there will be signs like ye olde big belly, teats waxing, bagging up etc. Otherwise, its ultrasound and palpation by a vet.

I know about the blood test mentioned here. But really palpation or ultrasound are your best bets and not really that expensive.

Personally, I think the horse is just gaining weight. She was very thin when he got her. Now that she has some good groceries in her, I think she is just filling out...

I told them if they were really concerned or curious, then call a vet..

My mother said she thought about buying a home pregnancy test for women and check her with. She said the only thing she could not figure out would be how to get the horse to pee on the stick...

I swear she was serious.

I tried to explain to her that the test may not detect the equine pregnancy horomone and it would be easier to just call the vet out.

Some days I wonder about my kin folk...

I would get her palpated. There are shots, vitamins, and more protien you need to feed if she's pregnant.

I would have her preg tested by the vet. Her, we slip them on the trailer and into Wagga Wagga (about 60km away) and the vet does a scan. Taking the mare in it is not that expensive and worth it if the mare was not in good condition when she arrived as the vet will check her out even if she's not pregnant. We prefer to know if there is going to be an unexpected bundle of trouble.
