Keep my boy Polo in your thoughtsWELL after doctoring my foal for pneumonia for the last 3 weeks, my attention is now turned to my love Polo.
He has a growth in his sinus cavity that is pressing on his septum.
We are scheduling surgery for sometime next week to have it removed.
They will be sawing through his face , cracking his bone and removing the 'thing'
It will be then sent off to determine what it is.
It is normally a simple (but ugly) procedure...but I worry because he is 24yo.
I will keep everyone posted and welcome any feedback from anyone with experience with this kind of procedure.

Oh Leah....I went through a period like this. You feel like Jonah.
It will pass.
Our prayers are with him..and you. Hope it is nothing serious. Keep us informed.

Does anyone have any information on standing frontal sinus flaps?
That is how they will remove the mass.
Or ethmoid hematomas? This is a possibility of what it is-or a tumor or cyst or abscess or or or.
I am so torn.

In the most recent Savvy eTimes (or what ever the weekly email is called) the letter from a member is about a guy whose horse has just had similar surgery & survived. The guy thanks Parelli for giving him the tools to train his mare to be relaxed & accept the surgery & the after treatment. Apparently she was quite hyper when he first got her.
They didn't show a face on photo of the horse so I guess there were bandages on her face or something.
I hope all goes well Leah. Surgery is always hard on an older horse but equine medical science is much like human treatment these days, so all should be OK.

Polo will not be having the surgery.
The prognosis is poor.

Polo is lucky to have you watching out for him and knowing him well enough to know what he can and can't handle. Usually we know we've made the right decision by how hard it was to make. Make this time with him worth every minute enjoy it to the fullest!

Ow Leah, I m so sorry for Polo and for you ofcourse.
There are no words to soften your pain...Try to enjoy the time together...tlalk a lot to Polo, and explain it to him so he can understand what s going on ...it does help (for both of you) !
Take care !

Leah, can they not do the surgery laparoscopically?
It's much less invasive. It had it done twice on one of my knees where they removed cartiledge - I walked into the surgery and walked out of recovery again 2 hours later.

Blue Flame, I thought about that but I guess the procedure is not advanced enough for this.

The only barrier that I know of where they decide on open surgery versus laparoscopic surgery is dependent on the amount of material to be removed - so it's about how long it would take them to get it out in little bits versus opening them up to get it out in larger pieces. Happened with my first knee surgery - they went in laparoscopically but found that the amount of material to be removed meant they'd be there all day versus cutting me open to get the torn cartiledge out.
So, was the growth/obstruction identified? What is it?
