LICE & MITES - Your eradication programs?

Hi all,

For the first time in 25years or horses, LICE & MITES has reared its ugly head. I have given the two horses obviously affected a 'Lice & Simple' dose, drenched them with Ivermectin and rubbed them all over with louse powder. Their rugs have also been powedered and put back on (too cold here to leave off and all rugs being used so no alternative clean rugs). I have powdered all the other horses and their rugs on the property just in case. What else can I do? What have been your experiences in getting rid of the problem?

Thanks
Clarissa

A friend of mine here at Gympie bought a property next to a deer farm & their horsespromptly got lice! The property had only ever had cattle on it so where did the lice come from?? Their horses were clean when they left Brisbane, travelled on their own in a brand new truck crate with fresh shaving for bedding.

Anyway it took Mel over a year to finally get rid of the lice. She had to regularly soak the rugs in a open 44gal drum with some solution in it & hand wash the hroses every few days with some stuff. I say 'some stuff' as I can't remember what it was. I do know one of her horses is allergic to all chemicals so the vet had her use some dog stuff. That might be why it took so long to get rid of the lice.

I will email her to get the name of the stuff. I know she used to brush them for ages daily with a special brush which perhaps got rid of the nits (or the adults).

All I know is it was a long haul for a lady who is scrupulously clean & tidy & hates all creepy crawlies!!

Good Luck Kylie!

I'm not sure if it's the same as here, but lice live in the ground.   You may need to spray your property to kill them.

Thanks for your comments. Equine lice in Australia can't live without their horse host for more than a few days so spraying the property wont be necessary. It appears that only 2 horses out of the herd of 6 in the same field have been infested. There are other horses on the property and again, none appear to be carrying but I have doused them all with Pestine powder (sulphur) just in case. I have the vet coming tomorrow to geld a few colts and will have him check out the two victims and guide me from a veterinary perspective.

I used the Absobine Ultra Shield fly repellent. We had a couple rescue ponies come in with mites (seemed really concentrated in their manes), and the spray worked incredibly fast!! Also, smells great. It's listed on the back of the bottle that it is good for killing mites, and it certainly was.

I looked at the powder, but all the "cautions" really freaked me out.LOL

You can use it as a premise spray also, or to spray down any blankets, halters, etc. I even sprayed the area's where I know they were rubbing themselves on, to stop anyone else from getting them. No problems since, and VERY glad they are gone!!!

Triocyl baths and Swift are the go for mites around here, pluis an internal ivermectin. We have not had lice, but apparently mites can be carried on foxes and rabbits. Only one horse is affected regularly.
