look what Hawkie did!I walked out into the pasture to see that Hawk had blood on his nose. Hmmmm, thinks I, what the? He then lifted his back left leg as high as he could and pointed at it with his nose. I took a look and UGH! It's like his leg exploded, and went right down to the bottom of his foot. There is a very thin split from the back of his foot, into his frog that we didn't even see when the vet was here. She's the hands in the pic. I couldn't figure out why he was walking on his toe if his injury was on the back of his leg. Took a closer look and there it was. Not sure how he did it, either. Might have been his ginourmous ditch jump he did, into the mud. May have come down on a rock.
And check this out! Eclipse and Bit usually just tolerate Hawkie because he's so annoying. He's getting better as he learns to be a horse, but they still don't choose his company. Gunner there in the white socks is his only friend, and even Gunner gets tired of him. Look at those mares! They positioned themselves on both sides of him. He kept tipping, thanks to some very good drugs. The girls may find him annoying, but they were there for him when he needed them. Had to move Eclipse out of the way. She kept putting herself right up against him so he could lean on her.
This happened yesterday, and he was on three legs. Today, no signs of lameness at all, and he was quite full of himself. I have him in a box stall because we are going to get quite a bit of rain, they say. The vet wants him out of the mud for a week, until granulation happens. He's on antibiotics, bute (this is his last day), and I'm wrapping his leg in a diaper, sideways and covering with vet wrap to protect it from flies. Using vetrimycine and will continue with some tea tree spray that Kelsey is sending. Cool boo boo, huh?

the funny thing is, Kelsey says "He sure is accident prone! Has he always been like this?"
"Nope, just since you got him."
She just had told me she was climbing on top of some cabinet, fell, hit the door and opened her forehead. She was deciding if she should go get stiches, or just tape it.
I said, "Kelsey, horses are our mirrior".
"Oh. "
She's a lot like my daughter, who I include neosporin for the purse and bandaids in her Christmas stocking. So does Kelsy's parents. Ya'll, I think it's going to be an interesting summer.

OUCH...poor boy! I hope it heals up fine. And yes, there is a LOT of rain headed your way. We got 1.5" just last night. This place is a swamp. Nice how your horses are banding together for hm. How sweet!
OK...so HOW do you keep fly masks on? My geldings have contest to see how fast they get them ALL off, even off the mares. We got tired of collected and cleaning them. Now I use fly spray roll-on around the eyes every 3rd day. If Bruiser was in a diaper, I'm sure he'd have it off and shredded within an hour.
Good luck!

You know Carol, normally Hawk would but I think he knows this is about him healing. He holds his foot up, out and to the side so I can put the diaper and vet wrap on. Leaves it on the ground for the boo boo juice, and cocks it so I can spray where I need to.
Fly masks? I keep a few of them on hand, and am always checking on the horses to make sure they are protected. It's a matter of eye infections for Eclipse and Bit. Sunburn for Gunner. The super masks with the double closures do really well, but there is no nose protection, and the flies are horrendous on their nostrals. Even pyranah isn't doing much right now. When I mow, I find the discarded masks and return them just in time to replace the newly discarded ones. Job security.
