Looks like we have a fractured pedal bone :-(Not confirmed until xrays tomorrow but its looking like one of my horses has a pedal bone fracture, she is non responsive to NSAID's and currently 8/10 lame. Vet originally thought lameness was caused by an abscess as we had one rather than thought we had! She is barefoot and if she needs to move we use Old Mac's which offer a lot of support and relief. If this is confirmed I know its Egg bars and rest. I appreciate I am jumping the gun but getting prepared for worst...
This horse has club feet, bowed tendons, the start of Navicular, Synovitis and an old sidebone fracture, now this... I did not do this damage the dressage world did I would like to add! We transitioned her to barefoot last year after we took her on and she has been doing really well.
Really I am after experiences with this, to shoe or not (I don't see that I have a choice due to the need to restrict the contraction of the hoof), any words of wisdom I guess.
My biggest problem is that although this mare is stabled at night currently due to weather and ground conditions I have the added problem that with total box rest I have no chance of keeping her settled, my other horse has back problems that require turnout and she is glued to her side all the time, if I leave her in alone she is going to spin all day. Our vet has already agreed that she is probably best kept in her routine as once out just stands at the hay feeders all day with the others, its the walk to the field and back vs spinning all day, short of doping her and hanging her from the rafters I'm screwed to be honest. I cannot even get her another companion to stand in with, only my other horse will do!! Plus she is RBE if I keep her in for 3 months she is going to destroy it upon turnout anyway.
I am so low tonight I cannot tell you, I am terrified the vet is going to deliver terrible news tomorrow, can we manage this with everything else?
This mare is stunning and we have transformed her life in so many ways, I am just devastated that after people hammering her all her life she has finally found happiness for her legs to fall to pieces now

What a beautiful mare. I can see why you love her and this is so devastating. I'll keep her in all my horsey prayers.
I don't understand why you have ruled out abscesses. I've had them take a month of soaking once a day to come to a head out the coronary band.
If the Old Macs help and you don't want to shoe, you might look at hoof casts. I used Perfect Hoofware with great success on my laminitic mare. I have since gone to regular hoof casts, which I got over the Internet for $8 each...$15 each at the vets or at Perfect Hoofware. The only drawback to the casts is that they are slippery on concrete or asphalt if that is part of your walk.

I saw the picture of your mare, (no glasses) and thought, "that's not a mare!"

What is the possibility of you rigging up a two bedroom corral with electric fence? Gunner had an abscess this morning, but I have something called "the nest" right in front of the shelter. That hay (straw would do) is probably 2 feet thick, and very comfy. If you could set something up for two horses, food water and soft footing, it might be your happy median. It would be outside, (it helped when Gunner was on stall rest to be able to see outside)would restrict movement, and your mare could have her friend with her. I'm not sure what your horses living situation is.
I know you must be worried to death. I'm so sorry your sweet mare is hurt. Try not to worry because you have no idea what is happening with her. It may be a very simple thing. Take it one step at a time, do your very best, and don't panic. You guys will work this out.

The xrays were done this morning, her RF joint has collapsed due to sudden deterioration of the combined DJD. She will have as long as she can stand the pain which will be days, maybe if we are lucky weeks.
She is grazing with her mates during the day, I guess she will tell us when she is ready.
We feel like the world has ended....

I am so sorry. How heart wrenching for you. We always think these animals are so strong, but they are really very fragile.
My heart goes out to you in the days and weeks ahead. It may be the hardest thing you ever do, but it will be the right thing.
.........hugs.

Thanks everyone...
Molly passed away quickly and peacefully on Thursday morning. She spent the last month turned out with her friends enjoying some nice spring weather.
She died stuffed full of her favorite food with me and my husband at her side, her equine best friend was a short distance away and said goodbye to her afterwards.
We are truly devastated and it will be a while before our hearts start to heal...

I'm so sorry that you had to make this hard decision. It is the very sad part about loving our animal friends, and such a hard aspect of our responsibility to them. She is so lucky she had such a loving home, after the things she went through.
