Loss of an EyeSo Jill got an ulcer in her eye that we tried super hard to correct but couldn't so we had to have it removed...I'm wondering if anyone else has worked with a horse that has lost their eye. Because of the whole break up situation she really hasn't had anything done with her in the past 3 months except for being medicated. I'm hoping to get her back soon and once I do I want to have a plan to rebuild our relationship and building her trust without that eye as I would like to continue her training and return to the showpen with her.

Sorry about your mare. I had a gelding that had one eye, & was a pretty cool guy. I did sporthorse & some H/J with him, and he did fine. He was blinded as a 2 year old by a halter trainer. I leased him to a neighbor girl & she did level 1 with him by using voice commands. When I rode him, he didn't like loose reins, so I always rode him in a snaffle with contact. I Hope your girl does great!

I know two people with totally blind horses. They trail ride and compete in Trail Class with these horses.
The horse will do fine and trust you...as long as you are trustworthy. Be a good leader. It IS a time to "micromanage.'

I know a number of horses with ne eye - they soon adjust, the only time is when they hear a noise on the worng side and may spook, otherwise you will probably not even notice the difference!

Kristen,
I had Jesse when I was Scarlet Belle on SC. He is my TWH that got the impacted sinus cavity and when the vets did the surgery, his eyes got corneal ulcers. One abscessed and the battle went on for about 10 months of me doctoring him most of the time at home.
Then, driving him for check ups and over night stays, etc. He had to wear a light blocking eye protector for a long time. I suspect he would have done well if we had to remove the eye. Fortunately, it healed.
I would not be able to afford to do that again....simple pull the tooth out, 6 hours of surgery because they broke his bones doing it in his sinus cavity. It was a long haul, but he will trust you. Jesse and I did a routine and he did well with me, even when we went off to other places. I took him to a clinic one time , doctored him while riding Flint in the clinic.
