Mare in heat - cleaning her up in winter??Hi guys,
One of my mares has come into heat already. I noticed that her first heat of the season is definitely the worse. She gets her 'juices' all down her butt and back legs. I know that in itself isn't entirely unusual but the amount of it is so much greater than our other mare. I'm worried that it will irritate her skin.
I've tried to take a soft rubber curry comb to her and it's basically useless. Obviously it's winter and I can't just hose and scrub the area down. So I'm wondering what I can do. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Early in the day you can bucket wash the area. She should dry before evening.
I would suggest putting vaseline on it but that would take away her insulation.
A good sheath cleaning wash would work well because it doesn't irritate if you don't get all the soap off. We use Excalibur.
Horses really do ok if the wash area is limited and they have time to dry. They are much more cooperative if the water is warm to start.
We have had several winter wounds and an old mare with loose stools so I have plenty of experience with washing in winter.

Yes, I would suggest hot wet towels and wipe it off. This is what I do with sweat in the winter.
