I am fighting mites with a horse at present but don't seem to be winning. I have been using medicated shampoo, invermol wash, pestine powder, lice and simple/easy and malaseb. Mites still seem to be there as hair baldness is speading after 3 weeks of tretment. The vet prescribed some of the treatments (invermol & lice & easy/simple). I am looking for ideas too! I have also increased their garlic and rosehip intake.
I also have one with lice and he seeems to be improving and the eggs are almost gone from being so thick I could barely see his mane at the roots.

Hi Kylie,
Can you load up some photos of where this horse is bald if he is chewing himself or rubbing himself silly?
Ours initially did have mites because we had 4 of them with fox mites. The one we can't get rid of is trying to stimulate his acupoints for his broken hip to the point where he bites holes in himself. With appropriate treatment for the itching and the pain in that hip, he is improving steadily. Could this be your fellow's problem?
An alternative thought is he is allergic to something in his diet or pasture. Mites and lice tend to respond fairly quickly to insecticides.
Worth a thought.

He was biting himself. We have now got rid of all the scabs, and he is more comfortable. He has had a dectomax injection, we have used diatom powder on his legs daily, and seems to be working straight away. The diatom powder has also been used all over the stables etc.
early days as they have a cycle of a few weeks, he has to have a repeat injection in a month, so will keep treating!

I use dimatacious earth (Geobond brand) and it also serves as a natural wormer. A tiny bit put in feed once a day. It also lines the tummy and cured my geldings diarrhea. My horses have no bugs/ticks/mites, except those nasty flies.
