My horse is coughing alot!! Is this ok?

I didn't know if this belonged in General Chat or here so I just decided to post it here....forgive me if I did it the wrong place:(

My horse has been coughing ALOT the last week or so! It's kind of worrying me.... She coughs about every 5-10 minutes. I can't figure out what's wrong!
Is this okay, and something that will pass, or something that I should be worried about?
What can I do to help her?

It's not OK.  A friend's horse blew her diaphragm and died from coughing.  In her case it was from dusty hay.   If that is your problem then wetting the hay down will solve the problem.

Rosie has an allergy to something in MannaPro pellet products and coughs.  I lost several months riding and clinics last spring until I isolated the problem.  Not sure what is in them that she's allergic to, but we tried the pellets on her once more and again coughing.   My other horses are fine with the pellets.   On something like this is took 1-2 weeks for her to start coughing and to stop when the feed was changed.   So if you've made a diet change recently, this is the first direction I'd look.  You can give horses Benadryl for allergies.  Talk to your vet about dossage.

If there is a nasal discharge with the coughing I'd call the vet.  Your horse could have strangles or another viral disease.   Strangles is VERY CONTAGIOUS, so I'd get this checked right away.   If your horse has strangles, your entire herd/farm needs to isolated until it has run its course.  It usually will run through a farm, infecting a good number of horses.

This is something I always have on hand since I have one horse with Alergies/heaves. It is absolutely worth it's weight in gold!! I just top dress his feed when needed and he LOVES it!!! . They do sell smaller bottles then what's shown here. It's a little pricey, but I can tell you, this stuff is amazing and the results are almost instant. I don't do 3x a day, but morning and night (only when needed), and that works for us when he has a fair up. Also, if you can keep your horse outside, the fresh air is much better then being stalled. I only stall him if I absolutely have to. He does MUCH better outside 24/7.

I agree with Carol in making sure it's not some type of infection though.

edit to add: Hosing down your horses hay is great no matter what the problem is. Anywhere you can minimize dust will be helpful regardless of the reason for the cough.

I think it is probably just dusty hay, because she doesn't have nasal discharge, and isn't doing it as much now....it kinda worried me acouple days ago though, because she was coughing alot more than she was before. I think I might of freaked out alittle She is better now.

Thanks for the advice anyhow!
