NRC vs FeedXLI know there is a whole course on the matter but in general are the NRC guidelines appropriate? Also for those of you that are familar with both, in general feedxl seems to have higher requirements; what are your thoughts on this? Regarding selenium, how much do you want in your horse's diet and how much is too much?

It's in the FAQ.
| Quote: | Are the horse requirements based on the NRC Nutrient Requirements of Horses?
No.The requirements for some nutrients like energy and protein are based on the NRC recommendations. However, the mineral and vitamin requirements are based on recent research or field experience. To give the best results for your horse, most requirements for minerals and vitamins are elevated above those recommended by the NRC. The NRC themselves acknowledge that some of their recommendations are based on preventing classical deficiency symptoms and not on improving reproductive and athletic performance. |

NRC just increased requirements within the last year-there are some pretty darn high requirements!
(I have the book)
Any mineral depends on the weight of your horse, his workload, etc
Thanks for that blurb Blue Flame-that explains the differences in the Xl results and my hand cranked results.
I base my diets on NRC

Thanks Blue Flame, I had seen that but am still curious on people's opinions on the difference. (Which it sounds like there may not be as much of a discrepancy with the most recent requirements).
Leah, I will definitely put that on my to do list. I'm a little busy with summer school at the moment but I still want to go trail riding too. Are the current NRC guidelines available online anywhere? 2007 is the most recent ones I have found so far.
