One of the BEST books ever writtenAnd I have just started reading it!
The book is VERY hard to find-you have to pay a premium and it IS amazing!

Dressage for the 21st Century.
A friend suggested I get it and I was a little nervous considering the cost but man oh man is it amazingly well written.
In case you ever find one listed for a reasonable amount of money...

What did you get out of it (or if you haven't finished what are you getting otu of it) that you haven't gotten out of other books you've read on the topic?

Yes-you will need to find it used.
I tried to order it new on Amazon and it was backordered for months.
I paid $80 with shipping for mine-that is a really good price!

It is an AMAZING reminder of why classical riding IS the mac-daddy.
The longer I am involved in horses the more I find myself drawn to very classical concepts.
The mental, physical and emotional is taken care of completely with pure classical riding-it just seems sad that so much has been lost over the years.
I still have a LONG road ahead of me but I am going more and more in that direction.
PB has a very nice style in his writing (or for me he does) which is another reason I like this book (so far!).

How bizarre!
My car broke down last night, so I took it to the mechanics this morning. They are quite close to the local saddlery (both of which are a fair distance from my home) so I took the opportunity to have a sticky beak whilst I was over that way.
The saddlery has a VERY small selection of books, and are usually WAY over-priced compared to eBay or Amazon. Anyway, I'm flicking through the books when behold! Dressage for the 21st Century!
Cannot believe it! It was priced at $75AUD - nearest I've found is 2nd hand on Amazon for $80US + p&h.
I'll put it on eBay once I've read it - my car bill was astronomical so it can't stay =(

Yes, it is a good reading book.
The style of writing is quite readable and there are some nice asides and insights.
I like the way he discusses riding at night in the dark, for example. He has good a number of other books available too.
If you understand German, the German version of the book is significantly cheaper.
Another book I liked for reading (rather than necessarily a how-to) is Henry Wynmalen's book "Dressage: A Study in the Finer Points of Riding". Some of the philosophies in there in the first part of the book are very familiar, especially to the NH student. This is a very cheap book to buy.

Second last. Mine is AS NEW, and is up for sale. I see that Amazon has jumped to $120 used - how strange. I WONDER what caused it...

I bought one for $80 from amazon. There were several others that were $150 and up. I guess all the lower priced ones are gone.

For those reading this book.
Just WAIT until chapter 2. PB gives the BEST explanation of posture and balance and the purpose for a correct seat.
You will shudder at the thought of the balance point after reading this.

I just completed chapter 4 and love this book more with every turn of the page.
If you want classical riding explained in a way that just makes sense AND a book that is beautifully written-but informational not totally artsy then this book really is a great find.
you just FEEL how graceful riding can be AND how powerful horses can be.
Amazing.

I also got "The Essential Paul Belasik" which includes three of his earlier books. They have a completely different emphasis - more on the spiritual/philosophical side of doing dressage. I am surprised that I'm actually enjoying reading them, too!
