Peeing

Odd question, but I am curious...

Why do horses stretch out to pee? I've watched a lot of horses and both male and female, young and old, different breeds and horsenalities all do it. Is it something physical, like the urethra needs to get straightened or something...?

Just wondering if anyone knows.  Google was not much help...plus I didn't know how to phrase my search. Mostly just got medical stuff about colic and people write on forums to take the riders weight off the kidneys when horses urinate.

You are very observant....good for you for paying such close attention to your horse.

They don't like to get splashed on the legs is one reason.

You might also notice they pick spots where there is hay, or straw/bedding so that it doesn't splash.

Mine tend to pee in the same strategic spots all the time.

Yes I always thought it was because they don't want to pee on their legs, especially if the wind is blowing. Del always pees in the same spot in the stable picking a spot with most bedding.

Hmm... Mine step in the puddle just about every time after they finish.  I also note that both my boys get splashed quite often. They are not very sanitary I guess.

What really made me think about it was watching mares assume the same position as geldings even though the location of the liquid being expelled is very different.  I would think the mare's anatomy would lend itself to 'squating', like dogs and cats, rather then the stretch.

I have mares that won't pee in the trailer because they don't like the splash...and if you watch, other horses will move away from a peeing horse to stay out of range.  LOL

My two pee on their straw beds, then they lie in it and end up stinking, the doors to the stable are always open, they choose to go in to pee, they choose to lie in pee soaked straw rather than outside on the grass.

Wonder if you put a small pile of straw outside of the stable for them to use. Like having a big litter box.

Why do dogs lift their leg to pee? Nature designed it that way for some reason. The body has to stretch out to allow flow. If you look at a chart of a horse's internals you will see that the bladder is not the highest thing in the abdomen so for the fluid to get out of it the horse has to lower it's hind a bit. Also in the gelding the urethra bends around a bit & perhaps assuming that particular position aids 'evacuation'.

My horses usually face into the wind & usually face uphill. They have special toilet areas but don't use them exclusively unfortunately. However they will walk 50m to use the toilet area to keep a cleared grass area clear of droppings.

Jude has a really long thick tail that drags on the ground & has trouble tipping it to one side to toilet & often gets it dirty. Sonny always steps in his pool as he stands up from peeing. That is remarkable considering the effort he goes to to avoid stepping in fresh poo, either his or another's!

Or why do we women squat to pee?  Imagine standing up and peeing?
