pellets or cubes,,Alfalfa that is,
My mom got some cubes, the horses like them of course. Right now we are giving them as 'treats' instead of cookies..
do any of you use these as feed? I read the bag, but I would like everyones opinions on them.
Thanks!

Alfalfa cubes can cause choke unless they are soaked in water and allowed to completely expand.

I have used the cubes as treats for years but I do break them down to about 1 inch thick. Red will dance Swan Lake for a few of them and they last a very long time.
At the feed store they are $11.00 a 50# bag. In the winter you can soak them in hot water and by the time they swell up they make a *nice warm meal* with a lot of energy for the cold nights.
I recommend them ............. But do not feed them dry as a meal.

I soak cubes and feed them to my horses. I take 1 to 2 scoops and soak them in a big bucket of water and divide it up between all 6 of my horses, so no one gets a lot but it is a nice treat on top of their food and they all love them. I used to break them apart and use them for treats until my friends horse choked on them now I am afraid of them dry.
I used to feed the pellets before I moved here and I didn't have much pasture. Just seemed to me like the pellets were more expensive, but I may not be remembering right.

My minis get soaked alfalfa cubes each evening with tiny carrot chunks. It is their version of chocolate chip cookies. I soak the cubes for at least 1 hour and often for 4 hours before serving. It also is good in the winter because it gets some water into them. I also use HOT water in the winter so it is really yummy and warm. They close their eyes when they are eating this - it's really funny to watch.

Thank you all for your comments!
This evening we soaked up some with HOT water.. They got poofy!
And Jet absolutely LOVED it! He ate slow and easy, like he was savoring every bite! hahaha
I even got a 'green' alfalfa kiss afterwards! He came up behind me and put his head over my shoulder and gave me a smooch on my cheek! HAHAHAHA
Bless him,, he's a doll.

Oddly enough, Ben hates cubes. He loves chunks or pellets, but thinks hay cubes are the worst thing ever, he will pick his way around them, knock them into crumblies and lick the crumblies, anything to avoid actually eating the cube itself, wet or dry. Any other food, he loves.

My horses have had cubes and they love them. They were fed free choice and dry. No problems at all when we fed them.
I have had a problem with horse bolting down pellets though. Not fun to have a horse choke on them because they were in a rush. Thank goodness they all managed to work it down and no major problems, but it could have been bad.

pellets or cubesWe feed a timothy/alfalfa cube and pour warm water over them to make a warm slurpy mess. They get soft pretty quickly. The horses love this.
