Poor frogs.

I seem to be having this on-off battle with some sort of fungal infection or thrush. It's only the base of the frogs that are attacked not the clefts or sulcus's
All 4 are affected. I keep cutting the bad bits away but it simply reappears in the same place over and over.
I have just started to use copper sulphate padded on when she comes in at nights, I don't know if this will be enough to tackle it from the outside.
The wet conditions here seem to have made it worse and the mare is definately sore.
She suffers cracked heels and mudfever, I am on top of that with topical care but this is making me think does she have some pH imbalance? Her frogs have never looked stunning but I never thought they had a hidden problem either.

She is a good doer so diet is minimal, so I fear she could lacking in something? She gets a broad spec vit/min supplement (equine answers 365 complete). The quality of her hoof is great and overall body condition is good, but I wonder if she is not coping well from within

Any advice suggestions what is a good supplement to help her immune system and pH please, UK products would be useful thanks
Autumn

Desitin on the cracked bulbs will work wonders, and perhaps, following the guidelines in the sticky for proper photos, take some pics of her hooves for us to ponder over??
Leah

oh yes-we need some new photos on this forum!

I need to post some hoof pics of my new guy.  Oooh oooh to die for....

It is really amazing the difference in hoof quality between horses that have never been shod vs those shod at some point in their lives.

jayvee, sounds like you might want to try a cleantrax soak, or some colloidal silver.  Dan Moore has a product called Staph Control that I also like a lot.

Vitamin / mineral supplements mean nothing unless you know the base values of your feed.

OH please do Mike.

HEY-you may know the answer. I heard that KC's PHW now has a way to add traction?

Know anything about that?

I would DIE for that.
karmikacres

I know he was working on several new things for the wraps.  I will see what I can find out.

OH thank you thank you.

SO much needed!

Not sure if this would help in your case, but I have found tremendous benefits to terrible frogs, since using the Epic boots with pads, loaded with Athletes foot powder. The mud here is sooooo bad right now, and I can sympathize with you completely.

I think the pads have helped with stimulating the frog, allowing for a better heal first landing, with the added bennefit of allowing the frog to dry out and toughen up. I think (my opinion anyways), that by continually carving off the top layers, you are not allowing them to harden, but instead, letting new tender soft frog to be attacked.

Of course, what works for one, might now work for all.

Just adding my 2 cents, and what seems to be really working for us so far.

UGH. You are KILLING me LTD

(joke here!!)

I know it works. Everyone says it works. *sigh*

I simply LOATHE boots. LOATHE them.

But as we speak I have new pads on order and boots ready to go.

So, you are killing me by being another one that says it works. LOL

LOL, well, it will be nice to hear your reviews Leah. I also heard how it would work, but...had NO idea of how well it would work.

Besides that, I have already saved a fortune in duct tape and pads, and the boots actually stay on. Imagine that.
Leah

So do you find this incredibly funny that I have bare horses, trim bare horses and have ZERO feedback on what boots/pads do?

Maybe it is good-this is the first horse I have had to face this with-and that includes a horse that had a hole in his sole with the coffin bone THERE!

EasyBoot RX.  Duct tape around the top if used on LBE....

HA! My LBE eats duct tape for breakfast!.... and lunch.... sometimes dinner

Good thing he got his parents feet.
Julie

I am trying the red horse stuff too - one of the barefoot trimmers helped develop these.
