Poor toads

I just felt bad that only the frogs got their own thread.

Poor frogs can always hope for sulcus security.

Just restoring the balance a bit with some of my pet frogs!

That first photo that Carol put up of the South American toad is very good. They are covering the whole of Australia just about now & being as poisonous as they are, they're killing masses of wildlife here that eat them. They were introduced in the 1940's in the mistaken belief that they would eat the sugar cane beetle.

Wow.  The wildlife doesn't sense that they are poisonous?  Are they harmful if you touch them or just if you eat them?  We don't have much in the way of dangerous frogs here.  Only snakes.

The toads exude a white sap from pad glands behind their ears (sort of over their shoulders) when they get upset/chased/ eaten.

It is toxic to many aussie animals although some have learned how to pull the toad apart without getting sap. Crows eat them with no apparent problems once they have become road kill.

Toads don't display any "I'm dangerous" type signs or give any signals to preditors that they should not be messed with. So all meat eating preditors grab them thinking they are an easy meal.

The sap is also toxic to people in so much as it can cause blindness & rashes although I have never had any ill effects. I kill as many as I can around here. I just grab them by the back legs & dash their head against a sharp edge which breaks their neck & dispatches them instantly usually. Worst that happens is I get peed on as I do it!

Some arty people make a good living tanning their skins & turning them into all manner of tourist wares.

No really  toads

They're a really big hit with many people.

For those who doubt or haven't experienced the Aussie predisposition for elevating anything to cult status, here is a nice little video!

You also need to know that toads just love to reside in dog's bowls resulting in many doggie deaths.

It also shows our ability to get a good laugh out of any situation no matter how dire, gruesome or fatal it might be!

enjoy.....
