SEQ Brumby rescuehttp://seqbrumby.com/is a small group of people who are trying to rehome local brumbies from the Toolara Forest east of Gympie. These horses are a combo of descendents from Fraser Is & local Standardbreds & Thoroughbreds that were let loose many years ago. Years ago brumby runners & trappers used to be employed to castrate the male foals every year to keep the numbers down right across the whole of Australia. Brumbies fell under the directive of the old National Parks Dept of the Federal govt. Then things changed & money got short so these cheap population control methods were abandoned. Then some people had the bright idea to spend lots of money & getting rid of them by other means & so the BS has continued all the while rejecting the simplest & most effective method of population control mostly because it causes temporary discomfort to the male foal. Every year the powers that be threaten to wholesale shoot the lot. The greenies would love it! (Don't get me wrong, I'm a greenie too but there are limits!) That culling does happen in parts of Australia usually by chopper & was to happen with these brumbies in the Toolara & Tuan forests. Obviously the people who run this brumby website have worked hard to bring common sense to the whole situation. Trouble is people keep breeding far too many horses in the first place. These horses are just horses of no particular quality, not that it's the horse's fault, but they have no big draw card in their favour. |
