Shedding frogsOne of my horses pulled a shoe, ripping off a large area of horn, which has meant he cannot have shoes on. the horn is particularly poor in this area, but farrier says its much better slightly further uo - frobably where he came to me and had his diet changed. He has had the font two equiwrappped as he was so sore on them. The back two, he is walking on ok though not on rough areas.
But he has almost shed one complete huge frog on the back right hoof and seems to be shedding the left as well. The frog below is flat and healthy looking. Is this usual when you remove shoes?
he will be going back to shoes once he has grown some hoof but want him comfortable in the meantime!

Shedding frogs is normal. Not so sure it has something to do with a pulled shoe. I've found just punching nail holes where I need them (which all farriers should be capable of doing) and fill in the ripped up area with glue works great. I always just about rasp off all my clinches anyway so if a horse does pull a shoe the foot is undamaged.

When Cappy shed her frogs in April, she shed all 4 of them at the same time, and all of them came off in one big huge triangle from front to back. I'm going to take that as a good sign, it sure was impressive!

When Scouty came to live with me in April, he shed all 4 frogs. Today I had to trim a little around the edges as they are so large I was having trouble getting the grooves cleaned out and they were getting a little thrushy.
