Tao of Equiss

Think I spelled that correctly.  Tony and I went to Barnes and Noble last night.  We love books stores.  I went to the horsey section and saw there was one copy of Tao of Equiss.  Not expensive, guys.  It got me from the first page, and I ended up buying it and bringing it home.  For those of you a little skeptical of the ac thing, but have an open mind.  Or those of you that are searching for that special connection from your horse, this is a great book to help you explore some of those ideas.
Gunner and I chose each other over two years ago, but I just didn't see how he would ever make it to my pasture.  This book talks a bit, (in the beginning, which is where I'm still at) about horses chosing the human.  One horse named Einstien would bolt, buck, throw potential buyers into the fence, whatever he had to do, until he finally found his human.  He interviewed the humans, and she was the only one he passed.  It gave me some things to think about when going out to buy a horse.  Does the horse choose you?  Like dating, is there that lightening, that spark, at first meeting?  Gunner and I share that.  Hawk has it with Kelsey.  Eclipse and I are more like an arranged marriage, but she's coming along.  Not going to sell her, at this point.  She is at peace here, loves her herd, even though I am not especially her human.  If that person comes along, I'd be willing to let her go.  For now, here she'll stay.
Anyone else read this book?  I'll continue to share, if ya'll want.  The woman that wrote the book, Linda Kohanov....Oh, it's The Tao of Equus...was a bit frightened when she started having woo woo experiences with horses.  Some of you may be feeling the same things, a little scared about some of this.  It sure has a great outcome, and once you let go of the fear, it is such a natural progression in your relationship.  Like when you and your husband or best friend start thinking the same thoughts, or you know when your kid is in trouble, so you call.
The thought that the role of the horse has changed from functional to teacher is something to be considered when you next take a look at your four legged partner.  To nurture a relationship of willing partner, intstead of one of dominace and control, makes me think we just might be evolving into a higher level of thinking and being, thanks to the vehicle horses provide.  They are no longer a vehicle of transportation, but one of emotional, and spirtual transport, to place we have only dreamed of.  Think of the gift of being in the now, and how horses gift us with that experience.  They ask us to remain balanced, not only in our seats, but in our minds.  They mirrior all the good and bad they resides inside, and patiently wait while we practice with our magic mirrior.  Alice in wonderland, through the looking glass, that's what we are doing.  Mirror, mirror in the stall...

Oh Deb...Are you on a path    An interesting but "good" path

I am reading it now for the second time, makes more sense to me this time    Further on in the book it does become a little hard to follow...but then maybe that's just because I wasn't ready to read it and understand it a year ago

When you are ready the teacher will appear

Perfect...keep going, would love to hear your thoughts

I've just noticed that I'm not "weird" all by myself anymore

I have read Tao about 10 times since 2002, and Riding Between the Worlds, maybe, three. I get something new each and every time I read them. The author has interesting and realistic things to say about communicators, like to look out for projecting. She also reminds you to use your head when dealing with trainers and clinicians, some of them are NOT "about the horse"...

Overall, I rate these books very high and would recommend them to anyone. They will help your relationship with horses grow in leaps and bounds.

I have the book ..just have not read it yet, so many to read.....   Some of us are doers...and we get to overwhelmed by the reading.  So it sits.  I love farming. Gardening. The idea of plowing.  Driving a buggy.  So some books sit.  I apologize, I need to read it.  Time is the factor.

I have had the book fo about 8 years and reread it many times.
I think she expresses a lot of the truths we have no adequate words for ourselves.  Very intuitive.

This book is next on my list.  I'm currently reading a book by the same author of The Tao of Equus (I think the title is Riding Between the Worlds or something like that.)

So far it's been fascinating so after reading about Tao of Equus here I've got to read it too!

Tao of Equus actually came out before Riding Between the Worlds--and I believe Riding Between the Worlds is meant to expand/accompany/compliment upon Tao of Equus, I enjoyed both books. Happy Reading.

carefreegirl,

I guess that's part of my charm, I usually get ahold of stuff like this backward.  I stood in the book store with both books in my hand.  Tao didn't pull at me like the other one.  Figures that I did it backward

I'd like to read them. I considered them a while back but I don't think I was ready for them then; will check them out, thanks!

Finished the Tao of Equus.  I got some great info. from it but found it a bit cumbersome at times.  I am half way through her second, Riding Between the Worlds and enjoying it more, although I think you need the Tao as a set up.  Very interesting stuff esp. the info. that emotions are carried by cells located in other areas of the body, "gut" and heart.  Might explain why I threw up before every jumping lesson I ever had!
