urinating after being ridden

Hi all,

Recently after each time I've ridden Saffy (or even during whilst out on trails, several times!), she's wee'd soon after I've gotten off. Maybe I'm just being a bit paranoid but it's concerning me because all the other mares I've had I've not often seen wee (more prude/discreet? ). I'm wondering if it might be a bladder infection or something?

calatar

Calatar will commonly pee on trail rides longer than 10 miles and unfortunately Eclipse has been peeing on the trailer after the trail rides (grrrr). They are geldings though, I don't have any mares.

I am aware of some horses with show backgrounds that won't pee under saddle because they have been punished for it .

I have a lots of mares.  I wouldn't worry about urinating, I'd worry about not urinating.   Lots of horses don't like to urinate with you on them, but most will urinate at the end of a ride, or during the ride if you take a long break.   Usually one horse goes and all the others follow suit.

I do have mares that don't urinate in the horse trailer, and they are a worry on long trips.

Also know when mares are in heat, they may pee and pee and pee again and again.   Don't panic.  It's normal.

my gelding is usually out in the pasture when the feed is dumped but if he is in his stall when the feed is dumped he almost always pees when the feeder comes into the barn with the feed. i am figuring that it is behavioral but not sure what the context is.
any ideas?

My mare will usually urinate toward the end of our ride. how she knows we are at the  end of the ride, I don't know. If the ride is relatively short she pees in her stall after I get her unsaddle her.

Ben almost always has a huge pee within the first 15 minutes of a ride.  He also tends to pee shortly after finishing his evening feed.

Several years ago when I was starting to explore unusual reasons for Sonny's apparent saddle fit problems, I wondered if he was uncomfortable being ridden with a full bladder. So I taught him to pee on command. He also poos 3 times before we play.

I had previously taught all my horses to poo before trailering so I don't have a dirty float! These days he goes 3 times before floating & pees too.    He's a good boy!!

On the first long trip (3.5hrs) I did with Sonny, I stopped twice to let him out to relieve himself which he did both times. Every time we go somewhere now he starts to stomp in the float when he needs to go & that lets me know to pull over.

Sometimes he is so desperate to pee, it's dribbling as he backs out! But he hangs on.  Then he groans a LOT & his eyes rolls in extasy!!   He hates a dirty float just as much as I do!

Some mares will urinate under saddle while in season. A friend's mare could trot and pee at the same time if there were any other male horses around during her seasons.

Another friend has a late-started sensitive mare that will urinate in the yard on the concrete straight after being ridden. My friend feels it is related to stress/release of tension. Pat has mentioned that Magic's frequent urination at tour stops/celebration is related to stress/tension.

As an aside, when in the first spring season of the year, my molly mule used to act like I was a mounting stallion if I rode her. She stood like a rock, doing submissive mouthing (like foals do when meeting older horses) and winking if I got on her back (she would do it even if I just put my hand on her withers if I was stood on the ground) and she used to be impossible to ride as she would not go forward at all. Each year has seen an improvement in this and I was able to trail ride her this year during her spring season without this reaction to me sitting on her back. However, if any of the gelding trail buddies looked at her or sniffed her during the ride, she would start to do the mouthing.

Clarissa, my mule also pees and poops on command. I pee and poop her in her stable before riding for her comfort. If the ride is long, I will take her off the trail into the undergrowth to poop her (she doesn't like to leave evidence of her presence on the trail). Mules also like to cover poops (like stallions do) and will cover their own poops very effectively so if I am riding in one of our fields, I can take her to one of her own poops to empty her. Sometims on the trail if there is no undergrowth to hide her poop in, she will eventually go over the poop of another horse when it poops on the trail.

My one gelding will pee when we are out. I just lean forward to get my weight off his back and let him finish. I figure it's the polite thing for me to do, and I would rather he go then hold it.

Thanks everyone, you've put my mind at ease. Liz, it's interesting as I was wondering if it might be tension, we're ironing out bracing at the canter and we've only just gotten to the stage where we've started trail riding so it could be the case. Carol, you're definitely right in saying I should worry if a mare isn't weeing, I'd just forgotten about it because Lily is so secretive at times. Though if a gelding happened to stroll on past the pasture it'd be a different story! Mares such loveable hussies.

My mare always wees at the end of the ride, I can feel her crossing her legs as we approach home, she has to be very desperate to go in public!
bit

Eclipse has her pee spots.  Bit waits utill after a ride.  Hawk isn't started under saddle but has no problem peeing when he needs to.  I just read about peeing when asked to by the endurance riders.  I guess they teach race horses to do this.  Hey, this makes house training a reality!  Wait'll I tell Tony!

My mule peeing on command into bucket:

I always pee and poop her before riding. When I endurance rode my gelding, I always peed him before the vet checks.

Very easy to train your horse to pee on command (a whistle). About 50% of the horses at our farm do it and 100% of the owners who have wanted to train their horse to do this were successful. The other 50% of horses have owners who are not interested in training their horse to do it. In other words, at our place we have yet to find anyone fail in their endeavour to train their horse to do this.

That's amazing Liz! Doubly amazing because you were able to get an action shot!

Isn't it so much nicer (& easier) to have a clean dry stable & float?!!

I just love it. I have been grazing Sonny out each evening along my road on the verges mowed by my neighbours. By getting Sonny to poo on command in the long grass across the track it keeps my neighbour's frontages neat & clean & keeps me in their good books. They certainly wouldn't want a big ol' manure pile in the middle of their lovely mown grass!

He's not yet 100% trained to pee on command & certainly would stop if I got a bucket out! It's a bit hard to get patterns & routine into his head. For example he is just turning 10yrs old & since day one I have been trying to teach him not to tread on the rope as he grazed. He just finally got it 4wks ago   My other horses got it within a few wks even as foals. So there is still hope for him peeing immediately on command. I can usually know when he is ready so I just wait around a while for him to settle.
