What is most important to you and your horse?Larry's post on the Horse's Perspective got me thinking...What is most important to you and your horse together?

PS - the poll only posted three options...there was a fourth:
Horsemanship - my learning what to do, when to do, how to do.

I voted for spending time with my horse. Sharing territory seems to be very important to him. Considering the time I spend with the horse is but a small fraction of the time he spends in the herd . . . .
Of course option 1 is important safety-wise, but I do not need him to be 100% obedient all the time. Otherwise I'd miss out on times when he offers things. However, there are some times when he needs to do what I say NOW - like if we are walking along a roadway. I don't ride in those situations.
Option 2 - no he doesn't NEED to enjoy all of our time together. I do what I can to make it enjoyable for him but there are some things he NEEDS to do even if he may not WANT to do them . . . like exercise. For example, yesterday he was grumpy and wanted nothing to do with me and turned to nip me when I touched his ribcage - he ran into a slap on the muzzle. The day before I had given him the benefit of the doubt as I thought he was tired from hooning with the herd - but he is covered in blubber and if he doesn't get more exercise soon on a regular basis it is going to cause problems.
Option 4 - I think that encompasses all of the others anyway, doesn't it?

Of course spending time with my horse. Her safety and mine comes in there, too. I don't know how you vote, though.

It's like potato chips. I can't pick just one

I thought about my comment. If I had to choose between a horse that was compliant but hated me, or a horse that I couldn't do anything with as far as ride, etc, but was in my backyard and I could go hang with and watch and care for, I'd pick the latter.

For me it has to be the 4th option.
what to do, when to do, how to do, why to do, what to do when you get there & when to stop!
As Blue Flame said that encompasses all the other 3 options.

I think this is true only IF the individual wants it to be true. There are analytical people who want to be exact and study to that end. They don't care about the horses's perspective on what they are doing, if the horse is happy, and often skip steps that would make the horse safer. You see this in a lot of competitive sports with horses.
So, as we answer this poll, I think it's important that we are answering as individuals, what it means to US.

However Carol, those analytical people don't actually havethe horse as their primary focus.
For them it would be about the rituals. The horse is just the vehicle or enabler.

Its a balance, really, but if I had to pick one, it would be safety and obedience. Doesn't mean I have to treat my horse poorly to make him safe and encourage his obendience, but I cant value my time or my relationship with my horse if I am worried about my safety.
